West wins 3-0 over Dubuque

Women of Troy tarnish Wahlert’s Golden Eagles

DUBUQUE– The West High Women of Troy improved to 22-9 overall for the 2014 season with a 3-0 sweep of the Dubuque Wahlert Golden Eagles Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the Eagles’ nest in Dubuque.
West won 25-16, 25-20 and 25-14 in an effort led by Madi Miller, Mikaela Morgan, Emma Norris, Ali Tauchen, Emily Halvorsen, Madi Ford, Laynie Whitehead and Madi Fay with three kills each. Ford had three ace serves as well, while Fay made two and Whitehead had one.
Defensively, Morgan and Tauchen led with two blocks each.

IOWA CITY– The University of Iowa Ashton Course was the site for the 2014 WaMaC Conference Cross Country Meet Thursday, Oct. 16.
Mount Vernon-Lisbon took the boys meet with 40 team points while the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers were seventh with 177. Rival Solon was ninth overall with 247. Center Point-Urbana’s Josh Yeager won the race in 16:10 while Jacob Tener led the Clippers with his 12th-place finish in 17:15.

Clippers volleyball sweeps South Tama

TAMA– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity volleyball team extended its winning streak to seven matches and improved its record to 18-6-0 with a 3-0 road sweep of the South Tama County Trojans Tuesday, Oct. 14.
The Clippers took the first set 25-15 before cruising through the second and third sets 25-7 and 25-7.

CCA running away with the season

TIFFIN– The bell rang out another victory in what has become a historic season at Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Friday, Oct. 17. With a 17-7 non-district win over Vinton-Shellsburg, the Clippers’ record increased to 7-1 overall, a record for the most wins in a season in the history of the program. In addition, the Class 3A District 5 Championship was finalized with Davenport Assumption beating Fairfield, 35-22.

Home décor store opens in North Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty business owner Peg Carr wants everyone to be allured by their home, wherever they live.
In mid-September, Carr opened Real Deals on Home Décor in North Liberty, at 225 Beaver Kreek Centre (near the Brown Bottle restaurant). Carr had been working in the Iowa City Real Deals on Home Décor location for about two years when the franchise came up for sale this spring.
“I didn’t have that on my radar at all,” said the Solon resident. “But after my husband and I thought about it more, it made sense.”

ICCSD financial state declined in 2013-2014

Personnel costs climb, key challenges lie ahead for district

IOWA CITY– The Iowa City Community School District’s (ICCSD) is in financial decline.
Those words weren’t heard Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the school board meeting, but buried in the 353-page board packet was the observation, written in the executive summary of the district’s annual financial report. “The district’s overall financial condition declined during Fiscal Year 2013-2014,” the report stated.
During his report to the board, District CFO and board secretary Craig Hansel tried to be brief.

Stone Soup Supper, Silent Auction to benefit community pantry

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Pantry will host its sixth annual Stone Soup Supper and Silent Auction on Sunday, Oct. 26, from 4:30-7 p.m., at the South Slope Community Room, 980 N. Front St., North Liberty. Event sponsors are Hills Bank & Trust Company and South Slope Cooperative Communications.

Highway 965 stage 1 reopens, construction continues into stage 2

NORTH LIBERTY– On Friday, the first stage of Highway 965 re-opened as scheduled. Advanced Millwork, its tenants and businesses in Penn Landing can be accessed from Penn Street and Highway 965.
Crews moved forward with the 600-foot section to the north, between Dubuque Street and the previous construction. This work, which includes reconstruction and widening the road, replacing the railroad crossing, and the addition of sidewalks and recreation trails, is expected to last into November.

Tiffin Trick-or-Treat Friday, Oct. 31.

TIFFIN– Trick-or-Treat night in Tiffin will be held Friday, Oct. 31, from 5 until 8 p.m. The city asks motorists to please be extra cautious when driving through town.
