Craft Bazaar at Plum Creek Nov. 7

SWISHER– Plum Creek Boutique will be hosting a holiday/winter craft bazaar on Friday, Nov. 7, and Saturday, Nov. 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in downtown Swisher. Seasonal crafts, blankets, and various gifts and baked items, as well as spa manicure, pedicure and tanning bed packages and gift certificates will be available for purchase. Place an order early in time for the holidays. Door prizes and refreshments will be offered.

Fun Days planning meeting Nov. 5

Community members are invited to attend a Swisher Fun Days planning meeting on Wednesday, Nov. 5, at 6 p.m. at city hall.
Public encouraged to attend to help decide whether Fun Days should continue.

Homemade turkey dinner

SWISHER– The Swisher American Legion Auxiliary will serve its annual homemade turkey supper on Saturday, Nov. 1, from 4:30 until 7:30 p.m. at Legion hall. Prices are $9 for adults, $5 for children aged six to 12, and free for children five years and younger. The juniors will be hosting turkey bingo upstairs from 4:30 p.m. until turkeys are gone. There will be activities for kids during bingo as well.

Five decades of Iowa aerial photography now available on DNR website

DES MOINES– Iowans have a way to look into Iowa’s past and view changes of their entire state, from decade to decade, thanks in part to REAP funding of the Iowa Historic Digital Aerial Photo Project.
The public can now see where former buildings were located, what kinds of industries and operations were on a site 70 years ago, and how development and urbanization has changed Iowa’s city and agricultural landscapes by visiting http://programs.iowadnr.gov/maps/aerials/.

Wenda Lee Brown

Wenda Lee Brown, 62, of Tiffin, died Saturday, Oct. 18, 2014. Funeral Service was Oct. 23, at Murdoch Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Central City, by the Rev. Josh Hansen. Burial was at Mt. Clark Cemetery, Central City.
Survivors include her husband, Dennis; two sons, Duane Albin of Tiffin, and Kevin Osborn of Marshalltown; eight grandchildren, Cody Albin, Mykayla and Leah Osborn, and Mathew, Tyler, Jordan, Devin, and Dani Brown; and her mother, Donna Albin.
She was preceded in death by her father, Keith Albin; and brothers, Larry and Howard Albin.

Food for Thought

I put a new canvas on my easel the other day but haven’t the slightest idea why. Or what I had in mind to paint on it. There’s something intimidating about a blank canvas. Maybe it’s because of all that white– the same thing that sometimes causes writers to be reluctant to commit those first words to a fresh sheet of paper.

West wins 3-0 over Dubuque

Women of Troy tarnish Wahlert’s Golden Eagles

DUBUQUE– The West High Women of Troy improved to 22-9 overall for the 2014 season with a 3-0 sweep of the Dubuque Wahlert Golden Eagles Tuesday, Oct. 14, at the Eagles’ nest in Dubuque.
West won 25-16, 25-20 and 25-14 in an effort led by Madi Miller, Mikaela Morgan, Emma Norris, Ali Tauchen, Emily Halvorsen, Madi Ford, Laynie Whitehead and Madi Fay with three kills each. Ford had three ace serves as well, while Fay made two and Whitehead had one.
Defensively, Morgan and Tauchen led with two blocks each.

IOWA CITY– The University of Iowa Ashton Course was the site for the 2014 WaMaC Conference Cross Country Meet Thursday, Oct. 16.
Mount Vernon-Lisbon took the boys meet with 40 team points while the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers were seventh with 177. Rival Solon was ninth overall with 247. Center Point-Urbana’s Josh Yeager won the race in 16:10 while Jacob Tener led the Clippers with his 12th-place finish in 17:15.

Clippers volleyball sweeps South Tama

TAMA– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) varsity volleyball team extended its winning streak to seven matches and improved its record to 18-6-0 with a 3-0 road sweep of the South Tama County Trojans Tuesday, Oct. 14.
The Clippers took the first set 25-15 before cruising through the second and third sets 25-7 and 25-7.

CCA running away with the season

TIFFIN– The bell rang out another victory in what has become a historic season at Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Friday, Oct. 17. With a 17-7 non-district win over Vinton-Shellsburg, the Clippers’ record increased to 7-1 overall, a record for the most wins in a season in the history of the program. In addition, the Class 3A District 5 Championship was finalized with Davenport Assumption beating Fairfield, 35-22.
