Harlan sends CCA home with 3-0 semifinal sweep Nov. 13

Clippers’ historic cruise at state ends early

CEDAR RAPIDS– While the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers only made it to the semifinals of the Class 4A State Volleyball Tournament, that’s farther than any CCA team has been since 1999.
The Harlan Cyclones blew through the U.S. Cellular Center Thursday, Nov. 13, and swept the Clippers 3-0 to end CCA’s bid for a state championship. The defending 4A Champion Cyclones had little trouble winning 25-12, 25-16 and 25-13 to end the CCA season at 27-10. Harlan was led by 2013 Class 4A Player of the Year Jess Schaben with 18 kills.

Nearad, Smith help power Solon semifinal win

CEDAR RAPIDS– Taylor Nearad doesn’t have a name for her serve. Maybe she should think of one.
“My dad calls it the curvy serve,” Nearad said.
Nearad’s sizzling, spinning serves helped Solon’s volleyball team wrest control of a Class 3A semifinal from third-ranked Nevada Thursday, Nov. 13, propelling the Lady Spartans into a championship game for the third straight year.
Nearad’s nine aces and fellow senior Jordan Smith’s 18 kills fueled a Solon attack that ended up sweeping the Cubs 25-20, 25-13, 25-21

CEDAR RAPIDS– They believed in themselves, and it worked.
The Solon volleyball team saved its best for last, whipping through the Class 3A state tournament without losing a set and claiming the title Friday, Nov. 14, against Mount Vernon at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.
Solon enjoyed a 48-29 kill advantage over the Mustangs, led by senior Jordan Runge with 18 kills, a 66 percent kill efficiency and four blocks. Senior Jordan Smith added 13 kills and 12 digs.

Snowmobiles stay for the winter in NL

Council decides to keep routes, tables action on ordinance

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty will allow snowmobiles to continue to travel through town.
At least, for now.
At its Nov. 11 meeting, the council considered an ordinance amendment that would revoke recreational snowmobiling within city limits, change the existing routes and restrict the operation of snowmobiles to the hours between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m.
City staff recommended the ordinance change as a result of safety concerns and citizen complaints, said North Liberty City Administrator Ryan Heiar.
