Tiffin officials remind residents to register pets

TIFFIN– The City of Tiffin reminds residents to stop by city hall to get all pets registered for the new year. Register in December and the fee is discounted to $4. After Jan.1, 2015 the pet registration fee will be $10. Remember to bring updated veterinarian records. The city receives numerous calls regarding dog and cats running loose. Contact city hall first, at 319-545-2572, if you have lost your pet. Pets are kept for 24 hours. If unclaimed, they will be taken to the Cedar Valley Humane Society.

Blues & BBQ gives back with donation to pantry’s garden project

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Betterment Group, organizers of the annual North Liberty Blues & BBQ festival, announced financial support for a community garden project of the North Liberty Community Pantry.
“Food is obviously near and dear to our hearts, and the pantry has been helping feed community members for nearly three decades,” said festival founder David Moore. “We saw an opportunity for us to aid an important local organization when it needed just a little bit of help of its own.”

Clear Creek Amana Community School District recognized

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana School District (CCA) was honored by the College Board with placement on the 5th Annual AP® District Honor Roll for increasing access to AP course work while simultaneously maintaining or increasing the percentage of students earning scores of three or higher on AP Exams.
Since 2012, CCA has increased the number of students participating in AP while improving the number of students earning AP Exam scores of three or higher.
CCA is committed to expanding the availability of AP courses among prepared and motivated students of all backgrounds.

Tiffin: get countywide, local emergency notices via phone

TIFFIN– The City of Tiffin is adopting an emergency alert system known as the Johnson County Emergency Notification System (JCENS). In the event of an emergency or severe weather conditions, an alert will be sent to the phone number provided by voice, text, email and/or pager.

Snowmobiles stay for the winter in NL

Council decides to keep routes, tables action on ordinance

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty will allow snowmobiles to continue to travel through town.
At least, for now.
At its Nov. 11 meeting, the council considered an ordinance amendment that would revoke recreational snowmobiling within city limits, change the existing routes and restrict the operation of snowmobiles to the hours between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m.
City staff recommended the ordinance change as a result of safety concerns and citizen complaints, said North Liberty City Administrator Ryan Heiar.

Nielsen sworn in as mayor

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty city hall has officially installed a new mayor.
Assistant City Administrator Tracey Mulcahey conducted the swearing-in ceremony for Amy Nielsen on Thursday, Nov. 13, in council chambers. Present were friends and several members of Nielsen’s family and extended family.
After Nielsen took the oath of office, she posed for photographs with various relatives, and took a moment to reflect on her recent election to the office.

Interested in playing indoor soccer?

SOLON– The parks and recreation director at Lisbon is looking to see if there is enough interest in the area to start an adult (16+) Futsal indoor soccer league.
You can go to the following website to find out more information: http://www.futsal.com. But in short, it is basically Indoor Soccer played five-on-five and uses a low-bounce Futsal ball. It uses a basketball court to play on, or similar indoor area.

Register now for boys basketball

SOLON– Learn the fundamentals of basketball, proper sportsmanship, competition, teamwork, and most importantly– have fun– as part of the Solon Recreation Department’s 2015 boys basketball program.
Registration for grades three through six will run from Nov. 20 until Dec. 15. Fee is $38 for Solon City residents (includes shirt) and $43 for non-resident s (includes shirt). After the deadline, registrants will be charged a late fee of $15.

Old Gold Diner: more activities

SOLON– Wanted: Persons interested starting some new and revisited activities at Solon’s Old Gold Diner.
The Old Gold Diners would like to start a quilting group again, with beginners welcome. The type of group and the meeting date will be determined after it is known how many people are interested.
Also, organizers would like to start an Old Gold Diner kitchen band. You wouldn’t need to know how to play any instrument; you would just need a good imagination and be willing to have a little fun. For either of these activities, contact Duane at 624-2251 between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. on weekdays.
