Proposal for apartments above storage units

SOLON– “We’ve got a disagreement,” said City Attorney Jim Martinek.
“But we disagree on what, though?” asked E&J Electric owner John Schmidt.
Apparently, what constitutes a commercial garage.
Schmidt went before the Solon City Council Nov. 5, seeking input on his concept plan to combine storage for his business with upper-level apartments adjacent to the E&J Electric location on East Main Street.
He came away from the meeting uncertain.
“I have no clue what I’m supposed to do next,” Schmidt told council members.

Senior of the Year: Rita Brannaman

A spirit of independence and courage

SOLON– If you know Rita Brannaman well, she probably has your birthday marked on her calendar.
She’s that kind of person.
“I care for other people,” she said.
Brannaman, 85, was named Solon Senior of the Year for 2014 by the Solon Senior Advocates this spring, an honor she shared with Fred Bark.
A lifelong resident of the Solon area, Brannaman has been a longtime volunteer for the Solon American Legion Auxiliary, a charter member of the Solon Women’s Club, an officer with the Sutliff Bridge Authority, and involved in a number of other local organizations.

Hawkeye men open strong

The Iowa men, playing in the second game Friday at Carver, picked up a 90-56 win over Hampton, had five players in double-figures and won the rebound battle, 48-32.
I said before he season that Jarrod Uthoff, Peter Jok and Trey Dickerson would be the three wild cards that could help Iowa get to the next level.
Jarrod started, only played 19 minutes, hit 4-5 from 3-point range and scored 13 points.
Peter came off the bench, played 17 minutes and scored 11 points.
Coach Fran McCaffery said Peter has improved his defense a lot and could start at some point.

Record win for Hawk women

The Iowa Hawkeye women’s basketball team started in 1974, which was also my first year of being a student at Iowa.
I don’t remember going to many games and the Hawkeyes didn’t have a winning season until 1978-79, when they finished 18-11.
Vivian Stringer came on the scene in 1983 and she helped turn Iowa into a national power.
When Lisa Bluder came on board in 2000 she promised an up-tempo game and balanced scoring.
The Hawk women opened up the weekend with the best scoring output ever in the history of Iowa women’s basketball with a 107-56 romp over USC Upstate.
