March 19th

Kismet, karma and clues

Walkin'

Three potholders mysteriously disappeared while Sabra was in the hospital recovering from a stroke. The one and only clue that bears on the case is that over the same time period and in very much the same area of the kitchen I broke three wine glasses.

Paying forward; paying back

Food for Thought

Not long ago, anchorwoman Diane Sawyer described a program in a small southern town where people of all ages can “pay forward” with three hours of their services and later receive three hours of free help from someone else. This sounds like a sort of barter system similar to one that operated in the Iowa City area 15 or 20-some years ago.

Why North Liberty needs 1105

As a North Liberty resident, I find it easy to feel insulated from big city problems. I don’t think my neighbors are hungry. I don’t worry that they are abused, unable to pay their bills, or struggling with mental illness
Local statistics shatter those illusions:

West, CCA boys compete at Demon indoor

West’s 4x800 takes second, Murray fourth in 1600-meter

IOWA CITY– The boys indoor track season opened last Thursday, March 6, with the Demon indoor meet hosted by Washington (Iowa) High School at the University of Iowa’s Recreation Center. The non-points earning exhibition match gave the men a chance to compete while snow still covered the ground.

Clipper girls ready to run

TIFFIN– Jane Astor probably isn’t a fan of Punxsutawney Phil, the infamous groundhog who’s prognostication of a prolonged winter seemed to be coming true.
Astor, the head coach of the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) girls’ track and field team, and her athletes are itching to get out on the track.
After all, it is rather difficult to run the hurdles in UGGs®.

Trojans ready for championship three-peat

West runs over City 74-50 for fourth state tourney trip

By Chris Umscheid

CEDAR RAPIDS– It was a good night to be a West High Trojan, especially if your name was Nick Gallagher. The senior was second in scoring with 19 points and second only to teammate Wyatt Lohaus (22 points) as the Trojans ran over rival City High 74-50 Tuesday, March 4, in a substate final at Cedar Rapids Prairie.
“He (Gallagher) probably wasn’t at the top of their scouting sheet,” West coach Steve Bergman said with a laugh after the game.

From microscopes to magnets, science night is a megahit at Penn Elementary

By Lori Lindner

NORTH LIBERTY– It wasn’t just about making ice cream. It wasn’t just the chance to watch things implode, play with worms or make objects dance in midair seemingly by themselves.
It’s that Penn students love science.
Penn Elementary School in North Liberty held its first-ever family science night on Friday, Feb. 21, and attendance exceeded expectations such that families were standing in lines– long lines– awaiting presentation times or for the chance to get up close and handle the items on the tables.

Greyson Gray: legend, terrorist foe, 12-year-old

North Liberty author writes popular young adult series

NORTH LIBERTY– Some people struggle their entire lives trying to figure out what it is they are passionate about, and what they want to do. For Benjamin, “B.C.” Tweedt, the answer is clear.
He wants to be a writer.
