Schools to hold 5K, 1 mile run May 17

NORTH LIBERTY– Penn, Garner and Van Allen PTOs will co-sponsor the second annual GPV PTO Rockin’ 5K Run/Walk and Little Rockin’ 1 Mile Run on Saturday, May 17. This event will begin and end at Penn Elementary. The 1 mile run will begin at 8:30 a.m., followed by the 5K at 9 a.m.
All proceeds from this event go to the North Liberty Family Resource Centers serving the students and families of Penn, Garner and Van Allen Elementary schools.

NORTH LIBERTY– We are approaching the time of year when residents of North Liberty are invited to display the American flag in a colorful acknowledgment of our national values and in support of those who are actively defending freedom around the world.
For the fourth year, the Optimist Club of North Liberty is offering the community an opportunity to display its American spirit. The Optimist Club will place a 3’x5’ nylon American flag on a 10-foot pole in front of your home or business on these five national holidays: Memorial Day, Flag Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and Veteran’s Day.

Referendum likely, but jail won’t be on it

IOWA CITY– The dilemma over the Johnson County Jail and Courthouse had the board of supervisors in meetings that at times were contentious late last year. After another failed bond issue last May, which would have built a justice center, combining additional courthouse space with a new jail, the supervisors have continued to battle over a variety of options.

City to eat unsavory premium increase for Tiffin employees

TIFFIN– The cost of health insurance rarely goes down.
And once in a while, there’s a spike in premiums that really causes jaws to drop.
The City of Tiffin encountered one such moment recently, experiencing a 36 percent hike in the cost of health insurance for its employees.
At a meeting last Wednesday, Tiffin council members considered whether any of the increase should be passed on to workers.
In the end, the answer was no.

ICCSD slices programs, then tees up next meeting

IOWA CITY– Public reaction to $3.6 million in budget cuts mounted at the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) April 22 school board meeting, and School Board President Sally Hoelscher threatened to curtail public comments as a result. Ultimately, director Jeff McGinness asked that budget cuts be placed on the next business meeting agenda for discussion, even though the 2014-2015 budget has already been certified.

Despite stormy weather, city officials and representatives from Shive-Hattery engineering firm gathered at the North Liberty Community Library Thursday, April 24, to give the public a chance to learn details of a few projects that will impact traffic in the upcoming construction season.

Spartans take down Western Dubuque in overtime

Solon defeats Anamosa, West Delaware

SOLON– After a loss to the No. 2 team in Class 1A, the varsity soccer boys have reeled off three in a row to move above .500.
Shay Croy scored the winning goal in with 6:47 remaining in overtime against Western Dubuque Tuesday in a constant drizzle, giving the Spartans a 1-0 win.
Croy rebounded a shot by Adam Nelson-Ockenfels, which escaped the grasp of Western Dubuque goalie McKade Bockenstedt and came back into play.
The victory moves the Solon boys’ record to 6-5.

Snider wins gold at 2014 North American fencing cup

MINNEAPOLIS– Maggie Snider of Solon competed in the USA Fencing North American Cup, taking first place in the Division 2 Women’s Epee event.
Division 2 is an open division with an age minimum (13 years), but no age maximum. The event included top youth, college and adult fencers from around the country. At 13, Snider is the youngest fencer to win the event in over a decade.

Lady Spartans blank West Delaware, Anamosa

SOLON– Solon’s Lady Spartans started last week off winning their second home soccer game of the season against West Delaware with a shut out score of 10-0 with 6 minutes still remaining in the second half.
The addition of two freshmen to the starting varsity roster has proven that this season’s team is on its way to a winning season.
Freshman Josie Durr and Junior Emma Moss dominated the scoreboard with four goals each. Senior Anna Seydel contributed two goals. Credit for assists went to Ali Herdliska, Jade Flansburg, Anna Seydel and Nicole Oberthien.

Gunnells wins Drake shot put crown

DES MOINES– They say to save your best for last.
Solon’s Shelby Gunnells took the old axiom literally and popped a career-best on her final throw at the 2014 Drake Relays to win the girls high school shot put competition.
