Ferguson doubles up in shot put, discus

Spartans dominate Denny Gruber Invitational

SOLON– Solon hosted its own invitational track meet last week, named in honor of former boy’s track coach and teacher Denny Gruber. He was most likely proud as he watched the Spartan boys outdistance second place Mt. Vernon by 57 points to claim the team title.
Final scores were as follows:
Solon 137
Mt. Vernon 79.5
Regina 76.5
Vinton-Shellsburg 70
CCA 67
Beckman 57
North Cedar 48
Assumption 23
Gruber still coaches the jumpers for Solon and they helped to get the team off to a great start in the field events, scoring two places in both the high and long jump.

St. John to take over Ely congregate dining

ELY– St. John Lutheran Church has announced it will take over the senior congregate dining and meal delivery service when Horizons Meals on Wheels ends service in April.
Situated in the heart of Ely, St. John has a long record of being committed to serving the community and didn’t hesitate to step forward when Horizons announced last week that its service to Ely and other sites would be discontinued due to budget shortfalls.
“It will be a big project to pull together in a short time,” said the Rev. Erika Uthe. “But there is no other option. Our people need to eat.”

Don’t stop

Workers for Alliant Energy disassemble the overhead flashing traffic light at the intersection of Highway 1 and Main Street Friday, April 18. In 2013, the City of Solon applied to the Iowa Department of Transportation to replace the overhanging lights with solar-powered lights installed on either side of the street. The lights previously flashed red to east- and westbound traffic, but yellow to north- and southbound lanes of Highway 1, which caused some confusion for motorists unfamiliar with the area. Curious trends: Some crimes on the decline

County sheriff’s office releases 2013 annual report

By Chris Umscheid

JOHNSON COUNTY– Sometimes there are no clear cut answers to explain why things are the way they are.
As an example, the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office (JCSO) released its annual report documenting the department’s activities in 2013. While some categories of offenses are down, Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek is at a loss as to why, exactly. On the other hand, in general, calls for service are up, continuing a trend that shows the department is busier with each passing year.
