Solon Optimist Bike Rodeo June 21

SOLON– The Optimist Club of Solon will hold its Summer Bike Rodeo on Saturday, June 21, at 9 a.m. (8:30 a.m. sign-up) at the middle school play area. Age brackets are 4-5, 6-7, 8-9, 10-11 and training wheels. There will be five contests (balance, steering and paper toss), with a boy and girl division for each age bracket. Each age bracket will have first, second and third place trophies. There also will be two overall championship trophies. Come practice your bicycle skills. Be sure to wear your helmet.

Calendar committee established; lunch prices to increase

SOLON– It’s official.
Solon’s school calendar will be developed by a new committee that looks a lot like the old one, but with one major difference.
School board members will be on board.
At its June 2 meeting, members of the Solon Community School District Board of Education approved the recommended members a new calendar committee.

Emerald Ash Borer found in Johnson County

Adult beetle submitted by resident, efforts still underway to locate infestation

DES MOINES– An adult Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) submitted by an Iowa City resident to the Iowa EAB Team has been positively identified as the destructive beetle by a federal identifier. A follow-up examination of ash trees growing in the vicinity of where the beetle was collected has failed to confirm an infestation.
A statewide quarantine restricting the movement of hardwood firewood, ash logs, wood chips and ash tree nursery stock out of Iowa into non-quarantined areas of other states was issued on Feb. 4, and remains in place.

Johnson County 4-H pancake breakfast

IOWA CITY– The 13th Annual Johnson County 4-H pancake breakfast will be held Sunday, June 29, from 7:30 a.m. until noon on the Johnson County Fairgrounds Building C. Not only will you get the chance to enjoy some great food, but many silent auction items will be available for bidding. Local Rural Health and Safety staff will also be on hand for free Ag Risk Assessments. You never know what you may find that day.

Iowa City man drowns in Coralville Lake

NORTH LIBERTY– An Iowa City man drowned near Scales Point Campground on Coralville Lake Saturday.
According to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department, 36-year-old Somphaeng Syvixay of Iowa City was with a group of friends and family that had jumped from a pontoon and were swimming over to a diving rock on the shore when Syvixay and another swimmer began struggling in the water at approximately 4:54 p.m.

Old Capitol Chorus brings home first place

DAVENPORT– The Old Capitol Chorus of Iowa City won the Central States District Small Chorus Contest held in Davenport on April 26. They competed against barbershop choruses from their five-state region including Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri and South Dakota. This is the chorus’s first district win since 1996 and the first win for the chorus under Director Chad Knipfer.

Council seeks to get ahead of future traffic congestion

Tiffin sees road block on temporary access

TIFFIN– The City of Tiffin is still looking for a way out.
With another planned development north of Highway 6 consisting of more than 100 residential lots, people who live off Deer View Avenue are concerned about future traffic.
The city council has discussed the issue in its recent meetings after hearing from citizens that anticipated increased traffic from new development Tiffin Heights will cause congestion, and that illegal parking– particularly from construction vehicles– on both sides of Deer View Avenue has created potential traffic and safety hazards.

Board gives attendance zone guidance, approves FY2015 budget adjustment

ICCSD talks school zones

IOWA CITY– During a four-and-a-half hour session, the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) board of education provided guidance to Superintendant Steve Murley on mapping attendance zones, and approved the 2015 budget at their June 10 meeting.
The school board appeared willing to moderate the mandates of the district diversity policy when re-drawing attendance zone maps, and the 2015 budget cuts, including world languages, sports, libraries and music programs, were approved without substantial changes.

City of Tiffin, school district come together on the sidewalk at last

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) schools and the City of Tiffin may finally be moving in the same direction on a proposed sidewalk, pending one more school board vote.
At its Wednesday, June 11, meeting, the Tiffin City Council approved an agreement with CCA for a new sidewalk.
