Lake Macbride park harvest and replanting meeting set for Sept. 29

SOLON– Interested neighbors and park users of Lake Macbride State Park have the opportunity to comment on the proposed tree harvest and replanting project scheduled for 2015.
A public meeting will be Monday, Sept. 29, at 6:30 p.m. at the Solon Public Library.
In the winter of 2013, Department of Natural Resources (DNR) foresters walked 933 acres of forest cover in Lake Macbride State Park, recording data to help classify and describe the woodlands which they then used to develop a Forest Stewardship Plan for the park.

New books

“Edge of Eternity” by Ken Follet. Ken Follett’s Century Trilogy follows the fortunes of five intertwined families– American, German, Russian, English, and Welsh– as they make their way through the twentieth century. Edge of Eternity, the finale, covers one of the most tumultuous eras of all, the 1960s through the 1980s.
“Personal” by Lee Child. You can leave the army, but the army doesn’t leave you. Not always. Not completely, notes Jack Reacher– and sure enough, the retired military cop is soon pulled back into service. This time, for the State Department and the CIA.

Mary’s Meals provides food and education to help impoverished children around the globe

Just one good meal

SOLON– In the early 1990s, Magnus MacFarlane-Barrow went to Romania with the simple goal of bringing food and clothing to children’s hospitals.
However, once he arrived, his mission changed drastically.
After wandering into a room where he admits he probably wasn’t supposed to be, he was greeted with the sullen, hopeless faces of about 50 children, long forgotten and abandoned by society. Some, even at the age of 12 or 13, couldn’t even walk, simply because no one had bothered to teach them.
At that moment, he knew he had to do more than just provide them basic aid.

Hello C.J.

Hawk Talk

Some of my homeboys from the Lodge have been telling me C.J. Beathard should be the starting quarterback for the Hawkeyes.
I like C.J., but when your starting quarterback, Jake Rudock, is completing 67 percent of his passes, has five touchdown passes and two interceptions it’s hard to pull the switch.
Jake injured his leg before halftime of Saturday’s game against Pittsburgh with Iowa trailing 17-7.
C.J. played the whole second half and Iowa came back for a wonderful 24-20 win over Pittsburgh.
What if C.J. doesn’t get hurt? Does he still go in?
