Successful season?

When you look back at the men’s basketball season and you see the Hawks won 20 games, finished 9-9 in the Big Ten and were ranked as high as 10th in the nation, you would have to say that’s not a bad season.
They also beat Ohio State when they were ranked third in the nation, beat Michigan when they were ranked 10th and made it to the NCAA tournament for the first time in a while.
All that says Iowa had a successful year, but when the Hawks lost seven of their last eight games it took the glitter off the season.

Jim Taylor

Jim Taylor, 59, passed away Tuesday, May 20, 2014, at his home in Anamosa.
The son of Wendell and Ruth (Davis) Taylor, Jim was born on Dec. 21, 1954, in Iowa City. He graduated from Iowa City High School in 1973 and began a career in the machine and fabrication industry. Jim enjoyed spending time outdoors, riding his motorcycle, and visiting with friends and family. His kind heart and easygoing nature will be missed by all who knew him.

Herman G. Stout

Herman G. Stout, 80, of Solon, died Sunday, May 25, 2014, at Mercy Hospital. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, May 29, at St. Mary Catholic Church in Solon, with burial to follow in St. Mary Catholic Cemetery. Visitation was from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church.
Herman was born on Feb. 2, 1934, in West Branch, the son of Gerald and Blanche (Cihla) Stout. He served in the United States Army. He married Ellen Cilek on May 1, 1956, at St. Mary Catholic Church, Solon.

Cynthia Shields

Cynthia Shields, 39, of North Liberty, died Thursday, May 15, 2014, at her home, while sleeping. She has rested from her labor and her works do follow her.
Funeral services were held May 24 at the Gay & Ciha Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. A fund has been established for her children at Great Western Bank in North Liberty.

Charles Sedivec

Charles Edward “Ed” Sedivec, 82, of Iowa City, passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, May 18, 2014. Funeral Services were held May 23 at Lensing Funeral Home, Iowa City. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Iowa City Hospice.
Ed was born in Iowa City on Feb. 2, 1932, the son of Charles and Lulu (Stafford) Sedivec. He married Tina Nichols on Jan. 6, 1989. For many years, Ed was a mechanic and owned and operated Ed’s Auto and Truck Repair in Coralville.

Cheryl Schiefelbein

Cheryl Ann (Kubisiak) Schiefelbein passed away peacefully May 16, 2014, at her home in North Liberty. Born Feb. 5, 1947, to Madelaine and Richard Kubisiak, her hometown of Stevens Point, Wisconsin, was never far from her heart. It’s where her mother, siblings: Carol, Charlotte, Gordon, Cindy, and Lee, and many other relatives still live. Despite her battle with cancer, Cheryl continued to look forward to the future, even making sure her garden was planted this spring.

Lucille Langlas

Lucille I. Langlas, 93, of Williamsburg, died Friday, May 16, 2014, at Highland Ridge Care Center in Williamsburg. A Memorial Service was held May 22 at First Presbyterian Church, Williamsburg, with the Rev. Gary VanHuekelom officiating. Inurnment was at Oak Hill Cemetery, Williamsburg. Memorials may be contributed to Highland Ridge/Willow Creek Unit or First Presbyterian Church, Williamsburg.

Douglas Kron

Douglas L. Kron, 54, of Hills, died Sunday, May 18, 2014, at home following a brief illness. Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated May 22 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Hills with Father Michael Spiekermeier officiating. Burial was at St. Stanislaus Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the Doug Kron Memorial Fund has been established.

Erika Jones

rika Jones, 70, of North Liberty, passed away unexpectedly at Windmill Manor on Thursday, May 15, 2014. A Celebration of Erika’s life is being planned by her family for a future date.

Gene Brawner

Gene E. Brawner, 81, died peacefully at home Sunday, May 18, 2014, surrounded by his family.
 Funeral Services were held May 22 at Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. Mark Pries officiating. Burial with military honors was at Oakland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to EWALU Lutheran Church Camp, 37776 Alpha Ave., Strawberry Point, IA 52706.
