Blame it on the dogs

Walkin'

I’ve been putting off replacing the plastic mat underneath my chair in the upstairs bedroom that doubles as my office. A man’s home may be his castle but in my case the only estate I am sovereign over is the office and the garage.

Don’t hang up!

Food for Thought

Go back to about a month ago. It’s just a few minutes past 5 p.m., and I’ve settled into my recliner with a drink to watch the evening news while my dinner simmers on the stove. The phone shrills, predictably, as it has every evening at about this time for the past month. I know it’s not a personal call. How do I know it’s not a personal call?

Harlan sends CCA home with 3-0 semifinal sweep Nov. 13

Clippers’ historic cruise at state ends early

CEDAR RAPIDS– While the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers only made it to the semifinals of the Class 4A State Volleyball Tournament, that’s farther than any CCA team has been since 1999.
The Harlan Cyclones blew through the U.S. Cellular Center Thursday, Nov. 13, and swept the Clippers 3-0 to end CCA’s bid for a state championship. The defending 4A Champion Cyclones had little trouble winning 25-12, 25-16 and 25-13 to end the CCA season at 27-10. Harlan was led by 2013 Class 4A Player of the Year Jess Schaben with 18 kills.

Nearad, Smith help power Solon semifinal win

CEDAR RAPIDS– Taylor Nearad doesn’t have a name for her serve. Maybe she should think of one.
“My dad calls it the curvy serve,” Nearad said.
Nearad’s sizzling, spinning serves helped Solon’s volleyball team wrest control of a Class 3A semifinal from third-ranked Nevada Thursday, Nov. 13, propelling the Lady Spartans into a championship game for the third straight year.
Nearad’s nine aces and fellow senior Jordan Smith’s 18 kills fueled a Solon attack that ended up sweeping the Cubs 25-20, 25-13, 25-21

Third time the charm for the Lady Spartans

3A CHAMPIONS

CEDAR RAPIDS– They believed in themselves, and it worked.
The Solon volleyball team saved its best for last, whipping through the Class 3A state tournament without losing a set and claiming the title Friday, Nov. 14, against Mount Vernon at the U.S. Cellular Center in Cedar Rapids.
Solon enjoyed a 48-29 kill advantage over the Mustangs, led by senior Jordan Runge with 18 kills, a 66 percent kill efficiency and four blocks. Senior Jordan Smith added 13 kills and 12 digs.

Tiffin officials remind residents to register pets

TIFFIN– The City of Tiffin reminds residents to stop by city hall to get all pets registered for the new year. Register in December and the fee is discounted to $4. After Jan.1, 2015 the pet registration fee will be $10. Remember to bring updated veterinarian records. The city receives numerous calls regarding dog and cats running loose. Contact city hall first, at 319-545-2572, if you have lost your pet. Pets are kept for 24 hours. If unclaimed, they will be taken to the Cedar Valley Humane Society.

Blues & BBQ gives back with donation to pantry’s garden project

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Community Betterment Group, organizers of the annual North Liberty Blues & BBQ festival, announced financial support for a community garden project of the North Liberty Community Pantry.
“Food is obviously near and dear to our hearts, and the pantry has been helping feed community members for nearly three decades,” said festival founder David Moore. “We saw an opportunity for us to aid an important local organization when it needed just a little bit of help of its own.”
