Unstable ice on Coralville Reservoir

CORALVILLE– The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that while the extreme cold has added ice to Coralville Lake, it has also caused the inflow of water into the lake to be less than the minimum outflow.
Reduced inflows into the reservoir cause the water level below the ice to slowly drop creating an air pocket between the ice and surface of the water. The lake level is approximately one foot lower than when the ice started forming in December. This results in very unstable ice. Ice unsupported by lake water is at risk of cracking, breaking or giving away at any time.

What we have is a failure to communicate

Stalled labor negotiations lead to public blame, dispute, union rally

North Liberty Leader
NORTH LIBERTY– While workers have returned to their positions at South Slope Cooperative Communications, they have done so under a company-crafted contract that has not been adopted by the workers’ union.
The lack of a negotiated agreement has created mounting tensions between union bargaining representatives and management since the previous contract expired at midnight on Oct. 31, 2013.
Last Thursday, Jan. 23, employees organized a rally and press conference at the North Liberty Community Center, to bring public attention to the situation.

When does the door close on open enrollment?

OE providing most of district growth

Solon Economist

SOLON– The Solon school board is happy with the way a recently-adopted open enrollment policy is working.
The district closed open enrollment for the second grade at Lakeview Elementary earlier in the year based on targets established for each grade level. All other grade levels are still accepting new students. March 1 is the deadline to file an open enrollment request with the district.

Upset Saturday

There were five upsets, according to wrestling rankings, Saturday at Carver.
Iowa had three, Minnesota two, but the Gopher pin at 125 was the difference and Minnesota took down the Hawkeyes, 19-15.
I was really surprised when Thomas Gilman (125) was taken to his back twice by unranked Sam Brancale.
The second time resulted in a pin and the Gophers led, 6-0.
Tony Ramos (133) got a 6-2 decision and 11th-ranked Josh Dziewa upset fifth-ranked Chris Dardanes 1-0 to tie the meet up 6-6.
Brody Grothus (149) lost, but the biggest Iowa loss came at 157.

Payback

Iowa’s 86-84 loss to Indiana in the first Big Ten game of the season was still on the Hawkeye women’s minds Saturday at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Ally Disterhoft hit a 3-pointer with less than a minute gone in the game, the Hawkeyes never trailed and beat the Hoosiers, 84-75.
Balanced scoring, Bethany Doolittle blocking seven shots, Samantha Logic handing out 11 assists and Iowa has its 16th win.

Hawkeye Men Split

Hawk Talk

The Hawkeye men took a couple of road trips last week.
They lost at Michigan 75-67 and then beat Northwestern, 70-65.
I didn’t have a good feeling as the Hawkeyes traveled to Michigan last week.
People were coming out of the woodwork projecting that Iowa was a Final Four team. A few even said they were a dark horse to win the national championship.
The Big Ten, which has to be one of the toughest conferences in America, is not even halfway through the season.
Plus the Hawkeyes haven’t even played Michigan State yet.
