CCA falls to West Liberty, sinks V-S

TIFFIN– Frank Sinatra once sang, “Riding high in April, shot down in May.” For Tim Benson and the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys soccer team, it was the opposite Monday and Tuesday, April 27 and 28.
The Clippers suffered their first loss of the season on Monday, falling 2-0 to West Liberty, but rebounded the next day with a 5-0 win over Vinton-Shellsburg.
“We caught a good team on a night they were playing well, and we didn’t play our best,” Benson said of the West Liberty game.

Five wins for Women of Troy in home meet

Moore, Willis, Haight, Dusterhoft and shuttle hurdle reign

IOWA CITY– West High’s Women of Troy put five wins in the book at their home meet Thursday, April 30. Olivia Moore won the 3,000-meter run in 10:58.07; Alex Willis took the high jump with a 5-2 leap; Chandler Haight took the shot put with a 35-10 throw; Leah Dusterhoft flung the discus 125-7 for the win; and Ally Bauer, Haley Roudabush, Kia Noibi and Grace Young teamed for the 4x100-meter shuttle hurdle relay win in 1:10.03.

CCA girls fourth, boys sixth in home meet April 30

TIFFIN– The Solon Lady Spartans and Mount Vernon Mustangs took the top honors at Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) Pacha Relays in Tiffin Thursday, April 30. Solon led the eight-team field with 183 total team points followed by Mount Vernon, Williamsburg, the host Clippers (88 team points), Davenport Assumption, Tipton, Iowa City Regina and Durant. The Mustangs led the 10-team boys field with 123 points followed by Regina, Solon, Williamsburg, Monticello, CCA, Tipton, Assumption, Durant and Wilton.

Co-owners and mother-daughter duo Yolanda Halferty and Dakota Zirbel opened the new shop this week in Liberty Plaza off Highway 965, offering a colorful medley of women’s clothing and home décor items, jewelry and tchotchkes that will blend well with any taste.
The clothing and some items are new, others are vintage, but all have been carefully selected by the two women because of their unique qualities and special appeal.

Highway 965 to experience detours now through July

NORTH LIBERTY– Pavement removal on Highway 965 necessitates closing Highway 965 south of the intersection with 230th Street and Pheasant Lane through the Dubuque Street intersection, including the intersection at 240th Street/Scales Bend Road.
This phase includes widening Highway 965, flattening the highway’s banked curve, adding traffic signals at Scales Bend Road, adding trails and sidewalks, and other safety and aesthetic improvements. The work is expected to last into July.

Kirkwood Community College, NL business capitalize on home brewing popularity

CEDAR RAPIDS– When Kirkwood Program Developer Matt Murphy first started brewing his own beer two years ago, he had a lot of questions.
In search of answers, he turned to YouTube, and found dozens upon dozens of videos produced by a young beer enthusiast who went by the handle, terpsichoreankid.
“He was one of my biggest resources starting out,” Murphy said.
“This one guy” turned out to be someone right in his own backyard; Joe Williams, a home brewing expert and owner of the Marion and North Liberty home brew supply stores, BIY (Brew It Yourself).

ICCSD plans more community engagement for boundary talks

IOWA CITY– The introduction of yet another set of secondary school attendance boundaries was met with disapproval and disappointment from ICCSD community members.
Administration presented the fifth round of boundary scenarios at the Tuesday, April 28, board meeting with three maps making the cut so far.
The first was 5B, previously referenced as 4B, which did not change from its last iteration. This map takes into account geographic areas while also balancing demographic distribution.

Solon girls fall in shoot-out to unbeaten Central DeWitt

DeWITT– It came down to penalty kicks for the Solon Lady Spartans and the Central DeWitt Sabers Friday, May 1.
And Central DeWitt was just one shot better.
On the wrong end of a 3-2 penalty-kick ending, Solon’s girls fell to undefeated Central DeWitt 1-0 in DeWitt.
“The DeWitt game was a fairly evenly matched game,” said head coach John Tucker. “Neither team was able to get the ball in the net during regulation, but we certainly had our opportunities. We played well, and fought hard.”
The loss dropped the Lady Spartans to 4-2 on the season, with a string of three road games this week.
