Trojans split on Senior Night

West falls 7-3, retaliates 11-1 against Davenport Central

IOWA CITY– The West High Trojans closed out the regular season by splitting a varsity doubleheader at home with the Davenport Central Blue Devils on Senior Night July 14. Davenport took game one, 7-3, before West regrouped and dominated the nightcap with an 11-1 win.

IOWA CITY– Nine West High Women of Troy were named to the Mississippi Valley Conference’s (MVC) 2015 Valley Division All-Division teams. The conference released its selections on Wednesday, July 15, with Dubuque Senior’s Sydney Tigges named the Division Athlete of the Year.

WASHINGTON– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) Clippers varsity baseball team closed out the regular season last year with the most wins in a season in the program’s history; 20. After a trip to Washington on Monday, July 13, the Clippers not only took a 13-9 shootout win, but also tied the high water mark with a 20-18 record ahead of the Class 3A substate campaign.

DeLaney hits for the cycle to lead West

IOWA CITY– Baseball fans were treated to a rare feat Monday, July 20, as West High’s Kevin DeLaney hit for the cycle. DeLaney, a senior, belted out a single, a two-RBI double, a two-RBI triple and a solo home run in perfect sequential order as he led the Trojans with four hits in a 14-7 substate semifinal win over the Bulldogs from Ottumwa.

Record-setting season ends in Williamsburg

Clippers beat Grinnell, 3-0; then fall to Raiders, 1-0

WILLIAMSBURG– Cappy’s Crew made it through the first round of Class 3A substate baseball by defeating the Grinnell Tigers, 3-0, in Williamsburg on Friday, July 17, but fell 1-0 to the Williamsburg Raiders on Monday, July 20.
The Clippers entered the District 9 semifinal with a 20-18 record to Grinnell’s 10-16 and, with the higher seed, took the “home” spot on the scoreboard.

World Link seeks host families for international students

SOLON– World Link and local coordinator and host Barb Messer are seeking host families in the Solon, Clear Creek Amana and Cedar Rapids College Community school districts.
“World Link is one of the few exchange programs with a real purpose,” Messer said. “We feel the best way to ensure long-lasting peace and understanding between the U.S. and other at risk countries is to enable young people to learn about the U.S. and Americans firsthand while educating Americans about their homes and lives as well, person to person.”

UI DeGowin Blood Center to hold blood drive in NL Aug. 3

NORTH LIBERTY– The University of Iowa (UI) DeGowin Blood Center will host a blood drive Monday, Aug. 3, from 3:30-7:30 p.m. in the North Liberty Recreation Center. North Liberty accepting social service funding applications

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty regularly contributes funding to local social service organizations, including the Family Resource Centers at North Liberty elementary schools, the Johnson County Housing Trust Fund and the North Liberty Community Pantry. As part of its budget for the current fiscal year, the North Liberty City Council set aside $11,000 in uncommitted funding for social service programs and projects serving North Liberty residents.

Public invited to volunteer clean-up event at Lake Macbride Park July 29

SOLON– Lake Macbride State Park will host a volunteer event on Wednesday, July 29, from 5-9 p.m. The project will involve repairing and clearing brush from the stone steps that lead to the Lake Macbride dam. Those interested in donating their time should meet at the Lake Macbride Fisheries parking lot at 5 p.m. Participants should bring work clothes, gloves and insect repellant.
