Affordable health screenings coming to North Liberty Sept. 28

NORTH LIBERTY– Residents living in and around the North Liberty area can learn about their risk for cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, diabetes and other chronic conditions with affordable screenings by Life Line Screening at the South Slope Community Center Sept. 28.
Screenings can check for:
• The level of plaque buildup in arteries, related to risk for heart disease, stroke and overall vascular health
• HDL and LDL Cholesterol levels
• Diabetes risk
• Bone density as a risk for possible osteoporosis
• Kidney and thyroid function, and more

Group to re-pitch pet project

Dog park group to address parks board Sept. 3

NORTH LIBERTY– A group of North Liberty residents urging the city to help build an off-leash dog park will address the North Liberty Parks and Recreation Board at its meeting Thursday, Sept. 3, at 7 p.m. at City Council Chambers, 1 Quail Creek Circle in North Liberty.
“Given the community support we’ll demonstrate with our petition, we hope the board will add an off-leash dog park to the city’s parks plan,” said group spokesperson Jake Villhauer of North Liberty. “The residents we hear from are very excited about the possibility.”

ICCSD school board approves $80,000 for more busing

District officials hope to revise busing criteria to recognize socioeconomic barriers

IOWA CITY– Parents came in droves to the Iowa City Community School District Board of Directors meeting, on Aug. 25, urging the board to add discretionary busing to the newly-opened Alexander Elementary. After hearing from more than 20 parents, the board voted unanimously to allocate $80,000 for discretionary busing.
As of last week, district officials said no date had been set for when bus service to Alexander school, located at 3571 Sycamore St. in Iowa City, would begin.

NLFD hosts annual fundraiser

NORTH LIBERTY —Bobbers Grill and Scales Pointe Campground were bustling Saturday, Aug. 22, as the North Liberty Fire Department held its annual “Salute to Summer” event. The daylong gathering featuring activities for kids and adults is the volunteer department’s fundraiser. The proceeds from the event will go toward additional training and equipment.
In addition to the department’s trucks, an all-terrain utility vehicle outfitted for brush fires and a large event Emergency Medical Services (EMS) response was on display. Funds raised in previous years made that purchase possible.

September activities for Old Gold Diner

Old Gold Diner fundraiser, Sept. 23: Double entertainment, back by popular demand, Johnny Krob, The Singing Cowboy, will delight us with music during the meal and, shortly after the meal, Joan and Jennel will entertain us with country, blues, gospel and yodeling. There will be a special meal. Watch the Solon Economist for more information. The cost of this meal will be $7 with no Old Gold Diner tickets being accepted. Proceeds will be used to continue entertainment on a monthly basis, and to pay for meals for those unable to afford them.

Weather delays football opener, but Regals hold on for 21-13 win over Spartans

IOWA CITY– As the wave of Solon players rolled down the steps toward the field Friday, Aug. 28, there was a definite energy in the air.
The fans felt it. The players were poised, ready to start the football season.
Players for Solon and Iowa City Regina took to their respective sides of the field and the captains strode out for the coin toss.
It was time… and then it was postponed 30 minutes due to lightning.
The players left the field, not to return.

Facilities Usage Meeting set for Wednesday, Sept. 16, at SMS

Solon’s 175th chautauqua celebration Sept. 18-20

SOLON– Not many 175-year-olds will celebrate a birthday for three whole days.
The City of Solon is gearing up for just that, as the community prepares to commemorate 175 years of incorporation Sept. 18 through Sept. 20.

Higher minimum wage on agenda for Solon council’s Sept. 2 meeting

JOHNSON COUNTY– After many public meetings, a litany of stories of personal hardship, lengthy debate and an overwhelming push of public support, the Johnson County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the first reading of an ordinance that will raise the minimum wage countywide.

St. Mary Catholic Church to host Harvest Festival Sunday, Sept. 20

SOLON– St. Mary Catholic Church in Solon will host its annual Harvest Festival on Sunday, Sept. 20, from 11 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. The community is invited to enjoy a chicken dinner, children and family activities, silent auction and more. Tickets are on sale at the church.
