Girls fourth, boys seventh at home meet

By Joe Wilkinson
Special to the Economist

SOLON– Heading toward mid-season, Solon cross country runners have a clear look at their first few runners, and a lot of competition through the rest of the lineup. They’ll need some of those ‘next runners in’ to step up in the weeks ahead.
In cross country, a school’s first five runners determine the team score. Every couple years, the sixth runner breaks a tie. For the Spartan boys and girls, there’s a lot of movement between the varsity and junior varsity (JV) teams to grab one of the varsity spots.

MARION– “One can find so many pains when the rain is falling.” – John Steinbeck.
Such was the case Friday, Sept. 18, when the Marion Indians fell like the rain to the Solon Spartans, 35-0, in a Class 3A District 4 struggle.
The sky was dark as Friday night’s game was moved to a 5 p.m. start due to a dour forecast.

By Doug Lindner

SOLON– “Shame on you,” the female voice said as a roomful of interested citizens exited the Solon City Council chambers Wednesday night.
The standing-room-only crowd had just witnessed council members unanimously condensing and approving three readings of an ordinance rejecting Johnson County’s increase in the minimum wage.
Activists, residents and business representatives spoke politely but passionately Sept. 16 for and against the council’s bypass of the hike passed by Johnson County Supervisors earlier in the month.
There was no council discussion.

New restaurant brings Italy to Main Street

SOLON– There are many things to love about Italy: its wine, its warm people, its masterful historic artists, bold history and ancient architecture.
Its food.
The Red Vespa Italian Restaurant now brings some of those fine Italian qualities to the heart of downtown Solon.
Aziz and Angie Longou are the couple behind the venture, the long-anticipated eatery that opened Aug. 25. Aziz has many years of experience as a chef and restaurateur in the Corridor area.
“I started cooking in 1978, and I think I did a good job,” said Aziz.

Marshall rocks Kinnick!

Hawk Talk

When you grow up in Solon, about 15 miles northeast of Kinnick Stadium, and you play for the Solon Spartan football team, you dream of playing football for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
You go back to the ‘70s, when Eddie Donovan, who played for Solon and was a Hawkeye halfback from 1973-76.
Eddie’s big moment came in 1974 when he caught a touchdown pass from Rob Fick with 12 seconds left to help Iowa beat Illinois, 14-12.
I was on the sideline at that game as a football manager for the Hawkeyes.
