Spartans rebound with win

Four TDs for Halston Durr in 35-14 win over Mount Vernon

SOLON– As the Spartans shook hands following their 21-13 loss with the Regina, a fog enveloped them like the smoke from a battle.
The stage would be different as the Spartans (0-1) met the Mount Vernon Mustangs (1-0) at Spartan Stadium on Sept. 4.
The Mustangs came to the game after putting up 285 yards of rushing and 82 yards receiving to defeat Marion, 37-14, last Friday.

Lady Spartans split season opener

SOLON– It was an evening of rivalries as the Solon Lady Spartans hosted the Clippers of Clear Creek Amana (CCA) and the Mount Vernon Mustangs, for a triangular set of volleyball matches Tuesday, Sept. 1.
The Lady Spartans split the meet, falling to CCA but defeating Mount Vernon.

The petals of where we belong

A community doesn’t exist merely in the present moment– its past and future are chapters in the story as well. A ‘rootedness’ or ‘sense of place’ connects the chapters with meaning in our lives. The great events and the small become our history.

No Solon council support for minimum wage increase

Council members, business reps split with county on hike

SOLON– Count Solon out.
Not a single public speaker at the Sept. 2 Solon City Council meeting supported adopting Johnson County’s proposal for an increased minimum wage.
They all spoke against it.
The mayor, all five council members and four Solon business representatives expressed their concern regarding the ordinance, which is scheduled for a third and final reading before the Johnson County Supervisors Thursday, Sept. 10.

Four-year-old calls 911 to help grandmother

Reminder of how important it is to teach kids emergency plans

SOLON – “I’m your hero.”
Four-year-old Nathan Cross of Solon whispered these words earnestly into his mother’s ear, sitting on her lap and turning to gaze up at her with big blue eyes.
His mother laughed and agreed.
“You are my hero, buddy.”

Unusual suspects

Five Solon community leaders to be incarcerated for a good cause

SOLON– They did nothing wrong, but on Sept. 23, five members of the Solon community will be sent to jail.
It’s up to supporters of Solon’s Old Gold Diner to bail them out.
The five men are donating their time so that others may continue to enjoy a hot noon-time meal each weekday.

Hawks beat heat, Redbirds

Hawk Talk

I don’t know about you, but I thought outside of the heat, that the Hawkeyes’ 31-14 opening victory over Illinois State was as good an opening game as Iowa has had in five years.
In 2011, Iowa beat Tennessee Tech, 34-7.
The Hawks opened the 2012 season with a 18-17 escape win over UNI.
2013 saw Iowa lose to Northern Illinois, 30-27, and last year the Hawks held off UNI again, 31-23.
As for the heat, I have been going to Iowa games since 1970 and that was the hottest game I’ve ever been to.
