More time, more questions

Mayor gives council until December to decide water request for Gallery Acres

SOLON– They still don’t have answers to all their questions.
Members of the Solon City Council would like to keep looking at a request by rural subdivision Gallery Acres West to extend municipal water, but Mayor Steve Stange wants the issue resolved before the end of the year.
The decision to continue investigating rural water distribution came at a Nov. 1 regular council meeting.

Hawkeye men show depth

Hawk Talk

Iowa Head Men’s Basketball Coach Fran McCaffery said at media day this year’s team has the most depth he’s had since he’s been here, especially in the front line.
The first two exhibition games have shown, so far, he is right.
Iowa played 15 players in the opener, including two walk-ons and Christian Williams, who has since transferred.
The emergence of freshman Conner McCaffery had to be one of the main reasons Williams transferred.
McCaffery was running No. 2 at point guard in practice.

Iowa’s first game ever against Ohio State was in 1922 and the Hawkeyes won, 12-9.
The Hawks actually won the first three of four and four out of the first eight, but since then only 11 more wins in the last 85 years, including last Saturday’s 55-24 upset.
That’s 15 victories since the series started.
The overall record is now 15-47-3.

Little feet

walkin'

Over the years, I’ve documented several times that my father in his prime kept in near perpetual motion doing part-time jobs to go along with his full-time job of deliveryman for Marshall Fields.
He distributed newspapers in the early morning, pumped gas on his lunch hour, drove taxi in the evening, painted houses, fixed cars on weekends and delivered Easter lilies while taking a week’s vacation from the iconic Chicago department store.
On a recent trip home, I learned of a couple more.

The yearly rush-hour

Food For Thought

Along about the end of October, Midwesterners seem to suddenly realize winter is on its way and there are a lot of things we intended to do during the past summer and fall that have yet to be accomplished. Between mulching the rose bushes and storing away the lawn furniture, we find ourselves scrambling to get to that family reunion put off almost too late again this year. And, didn’t we promise that favorite aunt we wouldn’t miss her 80th birthday party this month, but the visit is going to have to be shortened to two days, rather than the week she invited us for.
