Johnson County Archers’ 3D shoot at Macbride Nature area June 17-18

NORTH LIBERTY– Join other archery enthusiasts at Johnson County Archers’ annual 40 Target 3D Shoot on Saturday and Sunday, June 17-18, at the Macbride Nature Recreation Area (2095 Mehaffey Bridge Rd. NE).
The shooting is from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday and from 7 a.m. to noon on Sunday. There will be 20-plus targets set up on several courses and 40 arrows total. Door prizes, raffles, food, novelties and custom targets will be included. Cost is $12 for adults and $6 for kids.

Senior Advocates bus trip to Neil Smith Wildlife Refuge June 22

SOLON– The Senior Advocates are scheduling a charter bus trip Thursday, June 22, to the Neil Smith Wildlife Refuge, in Prairie City, 20 miles east of Des Moines. The bus leaves the Solon Recreation and Nature Area at 9:30 a.m., lunch will be at Giorgio’s, in Colfax, with arrival at the refuge around 1 p.m. A 5-mile bus drive through the area will provide a view of the herd of 75 bison and 25 elk living within the refuge. The prairie is a natural habitat for a diversity of grassland birds, wildflowers and perhaps a monarch butterfly or two.

Shueyville High School Alumni Association in need of help

SWISHER– The Shueyville High School Alumni Association is looking for people who attended Jefferson and Monroe Townships’ grade schools to assist in maintaining the history of schools in the area. Each year an annual banquet is held.

SWISHER– Join Swisher businesses on Saturday, June 17, for the First Annual Downtown Swisher Wine & Whiskey Walk from 2-5 p.m.
Round up some friends and make your way to our Downtown Swisher to sample a variety of delectable artisan Iowa wines, as well as Cedar Ridge whiskey. Each business will have samples and a representative from a different winery, as well as their own specials for the day.

Summer reading kicks off

SOLON– The Solon Public Library’s Summer Reading Program 2017, themed “Build a Better World,” officially kicked off Thursday, May 25, with Hills Bank and Trust co-hosting a fun evening of games. Hundreds of children and their families visited the library to participate in the special kick-off event and pick up reading logs for the summer.
On Tuesday, June 13, at 6:30 p.m., the library welcomes The Science Center of Iowa’s 2017 summer outreach program, “Building Blunders.”

Solon Citywide Clean Up, June 10

SOLON– The Solon Citywide Clean Up Day is Saturday, June 10, from 7:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
Collection will be handled at the Solon Recreation and Nature Area.
Acceptable items include: furniture, grills (propane tanks removed), bikes, lawn chairs, and other hard to get rid of items. Empty paint cans– dried without lids– will also be accepted. Tires for $5 and large tires are $10 each. Televisions and other electronics will be accepted for a $20 fee. Appliances will be collected for $20 each and lawn mowers and other gas engines for $15 each.

Whitehead to assume Solon council seat

Newcomer defeats appointee with 63% of special election votes

SOLON– Newcomer Lauren Whitehead defeated appointed incumbent Dale Snipes in the May 30 special city council election.
Whitehead won with 63 percent of the votes cast (139-81), according to final results posted by the Johnson County Auditor’s Office.
She will fill the unexpired term of council member Mark Krall, which ends Dec. 31, and the seat will appear on the November city election ballot.
Whitehead was expected to be sworn into office for the June 7 council meeting after the final tally was canvassed by the Johnson County Board of Supervisors earlier in the day.

Solon couple seeks damages from builder, developer and city

SOLON– A Solon couple claims their residential lot was incorrectly graded and was serviced by an undersized storm water intake prior to a damaging 2016 flood, according to a civil suit filed in Johnson County District Court April 14.
Marty and Jessica Kelchen, of 716 Bergamot Ln., seek unspecified damages from North Corridor Custom Homes, Inc., Fox Run Development, Inc., MMS Consultants, Inc. and the City of Solon.

This is the third part of a look back to 1983.

In 1983, the price of a one story, two-bedroom house was $36,000.
A new Ford Escort cost $6,900, gas was $1.29 per gallon and you could buy a stamp for 20¢.

The Hawkeye basketball team had a new coach in George Raveling, who coached at Washington State from 1972-83.
The Hawks finished 13-15, 6-12 in the Big Ten that year.
The starting lineup included the twin towers Michael Payne (9.3 points per game) and Greg Stokes (14.9). Both were juniors.
