Road Closure: Walnut and Front

NORTH LIBERTY– Weather depending, the intersection of Walnut and Front streets will be closed on Jan. 15 and 16. The closure is necessary so a contractor can remove two large trees. The closures will only last during the day, while the crew is working.
This work was previously scheduled to occur earlier in January, but was delayed due to the severely low temperatures.

“The competition is tough. The bar has been raised in our competition in the last five years quite high,” said Kathy Enyart, Executive Director for the Iowa State Dance Drill Team Association (ISDTA). “So for them to come as a new face, that’s a pretty remarkable accomplishment.”

NLPD’s first K-9 joins the squad

NORTH LIBERTY– Residents of North Liberty rest assured, Falco’s got you covered.
The North Liberty Police Department (NLPD) recently recruited its first K-9, a nearly 60-pound Belgian Malinois. Falco, who joined the NLPD in early December, provides a much-needed asset in broadening police coverage in Johnson County.
“Before, it was hit or miss; you’d call for a dog and there wouldn’t be one working,” recalled Falco’s handler, Officer Benjamin Campbell.
“But now, we almost have 24/7 coverage.”

Second half comeback not enough

Solon boys pick up 1st home loss against Benton

SOLON– A second-half flurry wasn’t enough to overcome a slow start, and Solon’s varsity boys basketball team picked up its first home loss of the season to Benton Community Friday, Jan. 5.
The 68-61 defeat dropped the Spartans to 6-3 on the season. The Bobcats improved to 6-2.
“We shot too many outside shots, and did not attack early,” Solon Head Coach Jason Pershing said. “That affected our defense as well.”
Solon dropped into an 18-9 hole in the first quarter and found itself down 18 points at the half, 39-21.

Road wins for Lady Spartans

VAN HORNE– The Solon Lady Spartans ended the week in Van Horne on Friday, Jan. 5, with a second consecutive road win as they exited the court to the traveling crowd’s cheers, following their final moment dribbling away the clock, defeating the Benton Community Bobcats, 44-42.
It was the team’s second win in as many nights, raising their record for the season to 5-7.

Spartans sweep Anamosa, Maquoketa

SOLON– Solon’s varsity wrestlers lost only two matches while sweeping a home double dual against WaMaC Conference foes Anamosa and Maquoketa Jan. 4.
The Spartans crushed Anamosa, 70-6, and clobbered Maquoketa, 75-6.
Solon gave up a pin in each meet.

Laurie Broghammer and Annelee Machacek visited with Matthew, Elizabeth and Annette McCue, of New York, at the home of Matthew’s parents, Mike and Kathy McCue, in North Liberty on Thursday evening, Dec. 21. Laurie was Matthew’s nanny when he was a baby.

Leo and Elaine Shima were Christmas Eve supper guests of Kevin, Sherri and Allen Shima.

Solon grad changing lives of individuals with autism in Utah

AMES– Autism is a neurologic condition that makes it difficult for individuals to communicate, form relationships with others, and use language and abstract concepts.
Through music therapy, individuals with autism can overcome the challenges they face everyday. While a student at Solon High School, Rachel Kucera found it to be her passion when her grandfather was in a nursing home.
He wasn’t able to speak but Kucera saw first hand how music therapy could spark his inner life. From that moment on, Kucera knew her passion.

Water Summary Update: Dry end to 2017 offsets wet start to year

DES MOINES– Iowa received a statewide annual precipitation of 33 inches in 2017, more than two inches less than normal, according to the latest Water Summary Update from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
The year began with a wetter than normal spring, followed by drier than normal summer and fall months, with the exception of a very wet October.

Women’s Club application deadline Feb. 1

SOLON– The GFWC/Iowa Solon Women’s Club sponsors scholarships and music campships with a Feb. 1 deadline each year.
Scholarship packets are available at the Solon Middle and High School guidance counselor’s office or through the music instructors. These scholarships are sponsored by the GFWC/Iowa Solon Women’s Club.
