Progress on all fronts, and a new name, too

Getting vets outdoors

Solon-based Iowa Veterans Outdoor Experience growing through giving

SOLON– They’re just taking care of family.
And veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces are the biggest family you’ll ever know, Brad Storck explained.
Storck is a co-founder of Iowa Veterans Outdoor Experience (IVOE), a homegrown non-profit which hosts a group of disabled veterans twice a year for an exclusive hunt on U.S. Army Corps of Engineers ground at Coralville Lake.
The group has been around for seven years, staffed by volunteers from the Solon American Legion and supported with contributions from area businesses and organizations.

Countless volunteers have carried the cause for Old Gold Diner

It’s not complete by any means– there’s a long list of people who helped keep Solon’s Senior Dining program alive since its creation in 1980.

They can’t finish it soon enough

North Liberty’s new police station is coming together slowly

NORTH LIBERTY– They’ll have to wait just a little bit longer.
While construction work progresses slowly on the new North Liberty Police Department facility (across from the fire station on Cherry Street) Chief Diane Venenga and her officers and staff continue to work out of their cramped quarters at 5 E. Cherry St.
It could be worse. The department, founded in 1999, started out across North Main Street in what was at the time home to the police department, city hall, and the fire department.

Bolts overcome rough start to shock Golden Eagles

Solon wrestlers make points count against Beckman

Spartans push past with 44-29 dual win

SOLON– The varsity Spartans wrestling team held a 24-3 lead against Dyersville Beckman five matches into a Jan. 9 dual meet in Solon.
But three of the wins had been forfeits at 195, 220 and 285 pounds.
Now it was Solon’s turn, forfeiting at 106 and 113.
Beckman followed it up with a major decision at 120 and a pin at 126 and suddenly the Blazers were up, 25-24.
But Solon would take four of the last five matches and distance itself for a 44-29 victory.
