CCA Dance Team competes nationally

ORLANDO, Fla.– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Dance Team traveled to Orlando, Florida, on Feb. 3-6 to compete at the Dance Team Union National Championship.
The team advanced to the finals round in Small Varsity Pom, placing seventh overall. This was the first time that the dance team has traveled to a national competition. The team is made up of 12 high school members, led by senior captains Katlyn Ernst, Skylar King and Nicolette Rohret.

North Liberty Leader’s Chris Umscheid takes a first in Iowa’s outstanding newspapers honors

DES MOINES– The 2017 Iowa Better Newspaper Contests announced, on Feb. 3, The North Liberty Leader’s Chris Umscheid took first place in the Best Sports Feature Photo division.
The Des Moines Register was named as the Iowa Newspaper Association 2017 “Newspaper of the Year.”
The awards were announced at the association’s Awards Banquet, Feb. 3, during the INA 2017 Convention held at the Des Moines Marriott Hotel.
Umscheid won first place in the Best Sports Feature Photo competition for Weekly Class 1 newspapers.

Sprout Kids Academy offers top-of-the-line everything

TIFFIN– It was a no-brainer for Aimee Pitlick when she was approached two years ago to be the director of a new childcare facility in Tiffin.
“I missed it. I missed the kids. I missed the work, the good things, the babies,” said Pitlick. “You have such an ability to make such a huge impact on them.”
Having already run Tiffin’s former Busy Bees Preschool and Daycare from 2005-2010, and with a business degree from the University of Northern Iowa, Pitlick was well prepared to take on the task of helping plan a childcare facility from the ground up.

Financial aid and scholarship night Feb. 23 at CCA

TIFFIN– On Thursday, Feb. 23, starting at 6:30 p.m., Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School will host its annual Financial Aid and Scholarship Night.
Why is this event held now? The federal government has ruled that you may file your application for federal aid starting in October of your child’s senior year. Therefore, district staff wants CCA parents and students to have every opportunity to apply in time to get their college financial aid in a timely manner.

School board green lights $190 million to complete FMP

IOWA CITY– It’s official: Next September, Iowa City school district voters will get the chance to decide if they want to commit nearly $190 million toward a general obligation (GO) bond to complete the 10-year facilities master plan (FMP) initiated in 2012.
At a special meeting held Tuesday, Jan. 31, the school board directors voted 5-2 to go “all in” on a bond proposal that would ensure funding for ongoing and future building upgrades, additions and new construction projects throughout the district.

Good Neighbor meeting Feb. 23

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty may soon consider a rezoning and subdivision plat for property and the public is invited to an open house-style meeting being held to explain the proposal Thursday, Feb. 23, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the North Liberty City Administrative Office Building, 3 Quail Creek Cir.
The property is north of 240th Street on the west side of North Jones Boulevard. The proposal is to replat several lots, adding to an existing multi-family lot, so that four additional townhome-style units can be constructed.

Methodist church offers support group Feb. 22

NORTH LIBERTY– Are you struggling with losing someone in your life from death or divorce or separation? Do you wish you could talk to someone else that has gone through hard times in their life? If so, please come to the First United Methodist Church in North Liberty, 85 N. Jones Blvd., Wednesday, Feb. 22, at 7 p.m. in the library to meet with others who are struggling. Anyone over 18 is welcome to attend. Free to all.
There will also be meetings on March 22 and April 26.

Blood drive, bingo at North Bend Feb. 17

NORTH LIBERTY– North Bend Elementary (NBE) in North Liberty will host a special night of activities Friday, Feb. 17.
A blood drive with the Mississippi Valley Regional Blood Center will be held from 2:30-6:30 p.m. in the teacher workroom with walk-ins welcome. There will also be a fun Rock and Roll Bingo night which will run from 5:30-8:30 p.m. in the school cafeteria, so plan to stop in and donate the gift of life and stay to play some rockin’ bingo afterwards.

Winter games and good cheer focus on the family

NORTH LIBERTY– Wind chills in the teens didn’t stop thousands from enjoying another year of North Liberty’s Beat the Bitter the weekend of Feb. 3 at Penn Meadows Park.
“It’s nice to have something to do in the winter,” said Sarah Espy, of North Liberty.
She and her husband Matt Espy, along with their two children, agreed the cold temperatures were worth the festivities.
“It could be a lot worse,” said Matt.

Lady Spartans end season against No. 10 Mount Vernon

MOUNT VERNON– They’ve probably seen enough of the Mustangs for now.
Solon’s varsity girls ended their basketball season with a 52-36 loss to Mount Vernon Feb. 11 in Mount Vernon.
The Lady Spartans had concluded the regular season Feb. 7 hosting the Mustangs in a 61-41 loss, then faced Mount Vernon again four days later in the Class 3A Region 5 quarterfinal.
Solon’s season closed out with an 8-14 record.
