State Forest Nursery launches new online store

AMES– Ordering trees from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources’ (DNR) State Forest Nursery just got easier. A new online sales site– http://nursery.iowadnr.gov/– features dozens of quality native Iowa trees and an easy check-out process.
Also new in 2017 are changes to how nursery stock can be used to accommodate a wider audience of people wanting to order bulk trees:
• Customers can purchase trees in bundles of 25, compared to previous order minimums of 200.
• Seedlings can be used for any purpose, including windbreaks or decorative landscaping.

Each year, Solon’s cross country opener, at Cedar Rapids Prairie High School, provides an eye-opener of what is going well early in the season… and what needs improvement.

Spartans spoil Liberty volleyball debut

Solon rolls 3-1 over Liberty High in Lightning Bolts’ new gym

NORTH LIBERTY– It didn’t take long for the Lady Spartans to be in the spotlight.
The Solon varsity volleyball squad helped Liberty High in North Liberty usher in a new age Tuesday, Aug. 22, when the Liberty High Lightning took to the volleyball court for the first time in their brand new school.
“It was a very exciting experience– the crowd was big and the noise was loud,” said Solon Head Volleyball Coach Sarah Ferin. “The girls came out a little nervous but we had talked about the atmosphere and to just refocus and control what we can and eventually we calmed down.”

Spartans sting ‘Stangs 19-0

Special teams triumph in season opener

MOUNT VERNON– It was another for the record books, 15 and counting.
This time the Spartans emerged from Ash Park, on the Cornell College campus, amid the clamor, victorious. Solon defeated the Mount Vernon Mustangs, 19-0, on Friday, Aug. 25, to kick off the varsity football season.
As the last 45 seconds of prep time ticked off prior to the start of the game, AC/DC’s “Are You Ready” drifted from the sound system as the Mustangs and Spartans prepared to take the field. It served as a song of reckoning for the Mustangs.

Doggie Plunge Sept. 7-8

NORTH LIBERTY– Bring your dog for some fun in the water at the Doggie Plunge! Pet owners 16 years and up are welcome; children under 16 must be accompanied by an adult. Early registration is $7 per dog; day-of registration is $10 per dog. One dog per person, please. Dogs must have proof of current rabies and distemper vaccinations present day of event. Adults are not allowed to be deeper than 2 feet due to limited chemicals for the dogs’ safety, and children will not be allowed in the water. If dogs are unable to “play nice,” they will be asked to leave without compensation or warning.

Madison Craig third at State Fair JELL-O Competition

DES MOINES– Madison Craig, of Solon, took third place in the Desserts category of the JELL-O competition, judged at the 2017 Iowa State Fair.
Entries were judged on taste, originality and best use of JELL-O.
The Iowa State Fair Food Department is the largest of any state fair in the country. There are 177 divisions, 769 classes and over 9,856 entries at this year’s Fair. Food Department judging is held in the Elwell Family Food Center sponsored by Blue Bunny Ice Cream.

Ely News by Lenna See

The Ely Town and Country Club met on Monday evening, Aug. 21, at Gwen’s Restaurant in Lisbon with about 30 members attending. She served a delicious meal as usual. Following the meal and business meeting, attendees enjoyed a talk by Bryan Bailey. He told about his walk across Spain. He walked 480 miles over a five-week period. He saw some beautiful country and made several new friends. His pictures were spectacular. Hostess was Viola Zahradnik.

Old Gold Diner fundraiser Sept. 27

• Thanks to Sam Lensing, from Sam’s Main Street Market, for sponsoring the Aug. 9 meal. It looked like he felt quite comfortable dining with us. If you see Sam, let him know we appreciate him and his store here in Solon.
• Bingo is typically every Tuesday and Thursday, 11 a.m. is penny bingo and following lunch, play is for prizes, with a black out final game for a free Old Gold Diner meal ticket as the prize. The second Tuesday of the month there will be no afternoon bingo.

Solon Library Board of Trustees vacancy

SOLON– The City of Solon is accepting applications for membership on the Library Board of Trustees for a city representative. The Library Board of Trustees meets on the fourth Monday of the month at 7 p.m.
Applicants must reside within the Solon city limits. Those interested in becoming a member of the board may submit an application to the City Hall at 101 N. Iowa St. in Solon. The application can be found on the city’s website at www.solon-iowa.com.

Solon Venture Crew tailgate party Sept. 1

SOLON– On Friday, Sept. 1, before the Solon-Regina game, the Solon Venture Crew will be hosting a tailgate party and informational meeting in the St. Mary Catholic Church parking lot from 3:30 to 6:45 p.m.
