Coming to America… Peter Jok

Hawk Talk

This probably won’t come as a shock, but I’m almost certain Peter Jok is the first Iowa Hawkeye basketball player born in Sudan.
Sudan is a country in Northeast Africa. It is bordered by Egypt to the north, the Red Sea to the east, and South Sudan to the south.
It is the third-largest country in Africa, and is divided by the river Nile into eastern and western halves.
Peter moved to Des Moines when he was 9 and lived with Mike Nixon, his guardian.
He is related to the late Manute Bol and current Los Angeles Laker, Luol Deng.

Summertime in days past

Walkin'

While growing up in the suburbs of Chicago in the late 1950s and early ‘60s, the last place in the world you wanted to be on a hot summer’s day was in the house because there was no air conditioning, much less video games. Besides, if you were around, Mom might find a chore for you.

What I did on my summer vacation

Food For Thought

From the time I was about 8 or 9 years old, I spent a week or two each summer at my grandparents’ farm. I don’t know what my sisters did during that time, or if our parents farmed us all out so they could have a week or so to themselves, but I doubt it. With the ambitious gardens Dad planted, and all the canning and freezing Mother would have done, that wouldn’t have been the best time for them to claim vacation time alone.
