Swisher fall block party Nov. 5

SWISHER– Join downtown Swisher businesses for several grand openings and a fall block party Saturday, Nov. 5, starting at 8 a.m.
The Black Squirrel Tap and Beer Garden will open at 8 a.m. with mimosas, bloody marys and the their secret house recipe, “McNutty Mary”– named after former Hawkeye football player Marvin McNutt. Black Squirrel will also feature tastings from Cedar Ridge Winery and Distillery, Lion Bridge Brewing Company and Iowa City Brewlab, as well as live music by Kevin “B. F.” Burt.

The Solon Economist and North Liberty Leader, in cooperation with the other newspapers in the West Branch Communication chain, will publish a regional list of holiday events in the Nov. 17 edition.

Library hosts autism-friendly browsing hour

North Liberty Community Library partners with Iowa City group to develop program

NORTH LIBERTY– Over 40 people attended the North Liberty Community Library’s first autism-accessible browsing hour Friday, Oct. 14. The library partnered with the Iowa City Autism Community (ICAC) to plan the event as an opportunity for autistic individuals and others with sensory processing disorders to interact with therapy animals and explore sensory stations and games.

Leo Truhlar of Cedar Rapids and his family gathered on Wednesday, Oct. 12, to celebrate his 90th birthday at Sutliff. Guests were Terry and Tony Truhlar and Tammy, Ethan, Nolan and Dalton McGauthier of Athens, Georgia; Barbara Morse of Livermore, California; Sherry Garnant of Ely; Anna Garnant of Des Moines; Maureen Smith of Clinton; and Maurice and Rachel Garnant.

Shafer leads Solon girls to 15th place at state cross country meet

FORT DODGE– Solon’s girls showed they were up to the challenge with a 15th place showing in the 2016 Class 3A state cross country meet Oct. 29 in Fort Dodge.
Though ‘last’ in that championship field, they outpointed every 3A team sitting at home for the day. Their finish matched a slow, steady improvement from middle of the pack showings early in the season to conference and district meet runner-up finishes and a No. 14 ranking from the Iowa Association of Track Coaches heading into state.

Spartans take round one

Win over bobcats advances Solon to face No. 1 Pella Friday, Nov. 4, at home

SOLON– After several dreary days, the sun peeked from the heavens and shone favorably on the Spartans.
Benton Community’s Bobcats traveled to Solon for the first round of the Class 3A football playoffs and the Spartans’ responded with an offense that wracked up 49 points and a defense that limited the Bobcats to just 14.
That effort places the Spartans on a collision course with No. 1-ranked Pella on Friday, Nov. 4, at Spartan Stadium, starting at 7 p.m.

Solon Parks & Rec Department

Girls Basketball: Practice has started. Games are played on Saturdays in November and December, starting Nov. 5, in the Lakeview Elementary gymnasium. The schedule is posted on the Solon Parks and Recreation website.

Swisher Auxiliary Annual Turkey Homemade Turkey Dinner Nov. 5

SWISHER– On Saturday, Nov. 5, from 4:30-7:30 p.m., the Swisher Auxiliary hosts its Annual Homemade Turkey Dinner. Adult meals cost $10 and kids meals are $5. The Junior Auxiliary will host Turkey bingo upstairs through dinner. Bingo cost is $1 per game with winners receiving a turkey to take home. Arts and crafts will be offered for children attending the event during bingo.

St. Bernadette’s Parish Fall Soup Supper and Bake Sale Nov. 13

WEST BRANCH– St. Bernadette’s Parish will host its annual Fall Soup Supper and Bake Sale on Sunday, Nov. 13. Serving will be at the church at 507 Orange Street in West Branch, from 3-7 p.m. Homemade chicken noodle soup and chili are featured, along with pie, cake, ice cream and a beverage. Cost is $7 for adults and $4 for children 3-10. Carry-out is available.

Women’s Club and library to host Holiday Tree Decorating Contest

SOLON– The GFWC/Iowa Solon Women’s Club and the Solon Public Library are sponsoring the Holiday Tree Decorating Contest to be held at the library. The proceeds from the contest will be donated to the Solon Splash Pad Fund.
