June 9-12 declared NL city-wide garage sale weekend

NORTH LIBERTY– Local organizers have selected the weekend of June 10 for city-wide garage sales in North Liberty and have set up a website with information for sellers and buyers: northlibertygaragesales.com.
In addition to the website, garage-sale-goers will be able to pull up a mobile-friendly Google Map and find nearby sales by item categories.
“I always thought it was one of those things dying for an upgrade,” said organizer Lydia Fine. “I just wanted to make it easier for people to find what they need.”

NL community center afternoon closure April 29

NORTH LIBERTY– On Friday, April 29, from 12:45 p.m. to 3 p.m., the North Liberty Community Center, including the North Liberty Community Library, Recreation Center and Aquatics Center, will be closed for employee Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate, or ALICE, training.

Last minute decision to buy scratch ticket yields $50K prize for NL man

CLIVE– A last minute decision to buy a scratch ticket ended up being in a North Liberty man’s favor as he won a big prize.
William Hedges claimed the 24th of 30 top prizes of $50,000 available in the lottery’s “Super Crossword” scratch game.
Hedges said he stopped Wednesday at Fareway, 615 Westwood Drive in North Liberty, for some groceries and decided to buy a scratch ticket, as well.

New owners of Maddi B’s Take N’ Bake Pizza Co. pass down values

SWISHER– Many people find a business they love and become a regular. Shawn Irons goes one step beyond: she buys the business.
That’s how she happened upon her newest business, Maddi B’s Take N’ Bake Pizza Co., a quaint little pizzeria and ice cream shop in Swisher. Eat-in booths were just added, along with a chalkboard wall for kids to draw on, making it a fun place for families to kick back and relax.
Since Irons and her family live within a mile of Maddi B’s, she said they frequently drove past the pizzeria. Every time Irons thought, “I just love this little place.”

TIFFIN– In 1984, “Footloose” became one of the most successful motion pictures of the year and of the decade. The story, written by Dean Pitchford, focuses on a big-city kid with a rebellious streak who moves to the small agricultural town of Bomont, Texas. There, he discovers the town’s preacher– in the wake of a tragedy involving his son and three other teens– has banned rock music and dancing.

Creek Girls bounce back with win

CCA defeats Marion, 2-1

MARION– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity girls soccer team suffered its first loss of the season Friday, April 15, on the road at Center Point against the CPU Stormin’ Pointers in a rare shutout.
The Creek Girls bounced back, however, and knocked off Marion, 2-1, on the road Tuesday, April 19. Hannah Bormann scored both of CCA’s goals, while Shauntina Williams held off the Indians’ attacks with eight saves as keeper. Clare Austin and Amelia Pereira gave a great defensive effort in the central midfield to limit the Indians’ attacks, coach Matt Harding said.

IOWA CITY– The West High Trojans won rival City High’s 2016 Forwald/Coleman Relays Thursday, April 21, with 138.33 team points to City’s 116.3 (good for second place). Valley-West Des Moines, Pleasant Valley, Linn-Mar, Muscatine, Southeast Polk and Des Moines East rounded out the field of competitors.

MOUNT PLEASANT– The Clear Creek Amana varsity girls track and field team placed 13th out of 19 teams at the Panther Girls Relays, hosted by Mount Pleasant High School, on Tuesday, April 19. West Burlington took the meet with 144 team points followed by Cedar Rapids Prairie (134), Mediapolis (101), Danville (86) and Cedar Rapids Jefferson (84) in the top five.

Cougars take CRANDIC golf meet from Women of Troy by one point

CORALVILLE– The West High Women of Troy hosted the 2016 CRANDIC Girls Golf Tournament Wednesday, April 20, and finished second to Cedar Rapids Kennedy. The Cougars won with a total score of 353, edging out the Women of Troy by one point.
Kennedy’s Sierra Hargens won the meet with a 72 while West High’s Jordan Amelon was second with 76.
