NL Annual Free Fishing Weekend June 4 at Liberty Centre Pond

NORTH LIBERTY– Join other area families Saturday, June 4, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., at Liberty Centre Pond for a day of free fishing and aquatic education organized by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, Scheels, Take A Kid Outdoors and the City of North Liberty. Bring your pole or an ID to check one out. Try to catch bluegills, catfish and more, right in town. Enjoy learning how to cast properly, take a look at live specimens of Iowa fish and turtle species, learn about water and boat safety and have a free hot dog.

Three Johnson County veterans added to Coralville Vets Trail

CORALVILLE– Three Johnson County veterans– Robert Hatcher, Rodney Walls and Gary Sopher– were recognized for their service by having their names added to the Veterans Trail at the Coralville Lake during the 2016 Dedication Ceremony held on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30. The three men joined the ranks of 185 other veterans, which have been added over the past 27 years.

SWIM LESSONS AT MT. VERNON POOL:

Registrations are still being accepted (up to a maximum of 64), although a $15 late fee will be assessed. The registration form is available on the Solon Parks and Recreation website or it can be picked up at Solon City Hall. Swim lessons will run the mornings of June 13-17 and 20-24 from 10-10:45 a.m. Swimmers will be picked up, by school bus, at Lakeview Elementary School at 9:40 a.m. and dropped back off, at the elementary school, at approximately 11 a.m.

Lady Spartans sweep Vinton-Shellsburg

SOLON– Solon’s varsity softball team outscored Vinton-Shellsburg 23-6 in a doubleheader sweep Thursday, May 26, in Solon.
The Lady Spartans opened the double-dip with an 8-1 win behind pitcher McKenna Miller’s one-run, six strike-out performance.
The Vikettes jumped out to an early first-inning 1-0 lead, but Solon came back to tie it in the bottom of the inning.
After a scoreless second inning, the Lady Spartans plated seven runs over the next four innings. Scoring in each, for the 8-1 final.

Solon pounds out 12 runs against Regina

IOWA CITY– A seven-run third inning propelled the Solon varsity baseball team to a 12-4 win over Iowa City Regina Thursday, May 26.
Solon opened the game with two runs in the first inning, a seven-spot in the third and three more runs in the fourth for a 12-0 lead before the Regals managed to muster a score.
Luke Ira and Zach Wegmann each had three RBI for Solon; Ira was 2-4 with two doubles, while Wegmann went 2-5 with two doubles.

Boys fall to West Liberty in soccer semifinal

SOLON– The Spartans had the lead but couldn’t hang on.
Solon’s varsity boys soccer team saw its season end Wednesday, May 25, after a 3-2 loss to West Liberty in a Class 1A substate semifinal.
The Spartans held a 2-1 advantage at the end of the first period on goals by Ben Carr and Brandan Childs, but Solon gave up two unanswered scores in the second period for the difference in the game.
Carr scored his goal at the 16-minute-mark of the first period, knotting the match at 1-1 after an early strike by the Comets.

Solon FC Soccer announces Fall 2016 Registration information

SOLON– Attention parents of students entering third through eighth grades, the Solon FC is a soccer club for boys and girls in the U14, U12 and U10 age groups. The FC is currently accepting players for the fall 2016-spring 2017 seasons. The FC is an exciting opportunity for Solon youth to work with high school and college coaches and players to learn soccer and improve their skills, play against other schools and have fun. Solon woman collects $50K on Ghostbusters lottery game

CLIVE– A Solon woman said she normally doesn’t play the lottery, but when she saw her favorite movie used as the theme for one of the Iowa Lottery’s new scratch tickets, she just had to try it.
Carrie Meyer of Solon claimed the second of 10 top prizes of $50,000 available in the lottery’s new “Ghostbusters” scratch game. She said she bought her winning ticket Sunday at Casey’s, located at 203 S. Market St. in Solon.
The 40-year-old said she scratched off her ticket later the same day and was a little disappointed at first because she thought she didn’t win.
