Clipper JV competes at WaMaC tournament

Schmelzer, Farmakoulas crowned champions

MARION– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) junior varsity (JV) wrestlers competed in the WaMaC Conference JV Tournament Monday, Jan. 30, at Marion High School and crowned two champions and two runners-up.
Hunter Schmelzer won the WaMaC 7 bracket by pinning Mount Vernon’s Graham Bradbury in 2:34 while Gavin Farmakoulas won WaMaC bracket 41 by taking a 1-0 decision from Williamsburg’s Cole Cremeens.
Shiloh Robbins was the runner-up in WaMaC bracket 2 while Grant Jensen was second in WaMaC bracket 13.
The tournament marked the end of the season for the JV squad.

CCA’s Murphy qualifies for state wrestling

Rohret finishes fourth at 145 pounds in district competition

FAIRFIELD– Quinn Murphy will represent Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School in the 2017 State Wrestling Championships to be held Thursday, Feb. 16, through Saturday, Feb. 18, at the Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines thanks to a runner-up finish in 138-pound competition Saturday, Feb. 10, in a Class 2A district meet held in Fairfield.
Andrew Rohret (145 pounds) finished the day in fourth place and finished the season with a 32-17 record.
Murphy takes a 36-13 record to Des Moines, where he’s set to wrestle Skyler Noftsger, of Ballard, in round one of competition.

Women of Troy roll over Panthers

Iowa City West blitzes Mount Pleasant, 63-33

IOWA CITY– West High’s Women of Troy pounded the Panthers of Mount Pleasant, 63-33, Tuesday, Jan. 31, at home in a non-conference matchup.
West held a slim one-basket lead at 12-10 after the first period, but poured in 19 points in the second while holding the Panthers to only five points for a 31-15 halftime lead.
The Women of Troy continued the carnage in the second half with a 46-24 lead going into the final period.

MOUNT PLEASANT– Iowa City West High is sending five wrestlers to the 2017 state championships Thursday, Feb. 16, through Saturday, Feb. 18, at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines after a Class 3A District 5 tournament Saturday, Feb. 11, at Mount Pleasant.

TIFFIN– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity boys’ basketball team was dealt another blow in a difficult season Friday, Feb. 10, at home as the Solon Spartans sank the Clippers, 82-50, on Senior Night.

CCA Dance Team competes nationally

ORLANDO, Fla.– The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Dance Team traveled to Orlando, Florida, on Feb. 3-6 to compete at the Dance Team Union National Championship.
The team advanced to the finals round in Small Varsity Pom, placing seventh overall. This was the first time that the dance team has traveled to a national competition. The team is made up of 12 high school members, led by senior captains Katlyn Ernst, Skylar King and Nicolette Rohret.

North Liberty Leader’s Chris Umscheid takes a first in Iowa’s outstanding newspapers honors

DES MOINES– The 2017 Iowa Better Newspaper Contests announced, on Feb. 3, The North Liberty Leader’s Chris Umscheid took first place in the Best Sports Feature Photo division.
The Des Moines Register was named as the Iowa Newspaper Association 2017 “Newspaper of the Year.”
The awards were announced at the association’s Awards Banquet, Feb. 3, during the INA 2017 Convention held at the Des Moines Marriott Hotel.
Umscheid won first place in the Best Sports Feature Photo competition for Weekly Class 1 newspapers.

Financial aid and scholarship night Feb. 23 at CCA

TIFFIN– On Thursday, Feb. 23, starting at 6:30 p.m., Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School will host its annual Financial Aid and Scholarship Night.
Why is this event held now? The federal government has ruled that you may file your application for federal aid starting in October of your child’s senior year. Therefore, district staff wants CCA parents and students to have every opportunity to apply in time to get their college financial aid in a timely manner.

School board green lights $190 million to complete FMP

IOWA CITY– It’s official: Next September, Iowa City school district voters will get the chance to decide if they want to commit nearly $190 million toward a general obligation (GO) bond to complete the 10-year facilities master plan (FMP) initiated in 2012.
At a special meeting held Tuesday, Jan. 31, the school board directors voted 5-2 to go “all in” on a bond proposal that would ensure funding for ongoing and future building upgrades, additions and new construction projects throughout the district.

Good Neighbor meeting Feb. 23

NORTH LIBERTY– The City of North Liberty may soon consider a rezoning and subdivision plat for property and the public is invited to an open house-style meeting being held to explain the proposal Thursday, Feb. 23, from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the North Liberty City Administrative Office Building, 3 Quail Creek Cir.
The property is north of 240th Street on the west side of North Jones Boulevard. The proposal is to replat several lots, adding to an existing multi-family lot, so that four additional townhome-style units can be constructed.
