DES MOINES–The 2009 legislative session convened on Monday, Jan. 12.
One thing was immediately clear to every Republican and Democratic state legislator: the deepening national recession will make this session very challenging.
The nation’s economy is not good, and it’s not getting better. Even though the Iowa economy and our state budget are in much better shape than most states, we are still sharing the national pain.


School boundary discussion tests limits

NORTH LIBERTY– Iowa City Superintendent Lane Plugge said he had no illusions that everyone would be pleased.
Dr. Plugge and Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) Associate Superintendent Jim Behle proposed a revised boundary scenario for a new elementary school in North Liberty at a public forum at Penn Elementary last Wednesday, Jan. 14, and the response of some who attended matched the evening’s frigid weather.


Lane Plugge honored as Iowa’s Superintendent of the Year

IOWA CITY– Words of praise were plentiful at Elizabeth Tate High School in Iowa City last week.
Superintendent of Iowa City Community School District Dr. Lane Plugge was recognized as Iowa Superintendent of the Year by the School Administrators of Iowa (SAI) organization, and district officials held a reception at Tate High School to honor him Wed., Jan. 7.
Guest speakers offered positive remarks about Plugge, his accomplishments within the district and his encouraging supervisory style, including former ICCSD Board of Directors member Pete Wallace.


Van Allen to host dance marathon

NORTH LIBERTY– James Van Allen Elementary School in North Liberty will host a Dance Marathon on Friday, Jan. 30, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The event is sponsored by the James Van Allen Student Council. This is a fundraiser for the University of Iowa Children's Hospital Oncology Unit and Children's Miracle Network. Family tickets are $10 and individual tickets are $5. Students should come with their families. Along with the dance by DJ Mark Robe, there will be a cake auction and refreshment booth.

City of North Liberty hosts annual Super Bowl Party Feb. 1

NORTH LIBERTY– Join the fun of the annual Super Bowl Party on Sunday, Feb. 1 at the Gerdin Conference Center in the North Liberty Community Center.
Watch the game on the big screen while your kids enjoy activities and games. Non-alcoholic beverages will be served at this family-friendly event. Door prize drawings will be held throughout the evening. This event is free and open to the public.
The party begins 30 minutes before the game and lasts until the game ends. Bring a covered dish to share for a community potluck.


Boy Scout Troop to host chili supper Feb. 7

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty Boy Scout Troop 216 will host its 29th annual Chili Supper from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7 at the North Liberty Community Center.
Tickets are $5. Children 5 and under are admitted free. The dinner includes all-you-can-eat meat or vegetarian chili, bread, drinks and a variety of homemade desserts, including traditional scout cobbler.
The dinner is the troop’s only annual fundraising event. Proceeds help cover the cost of high adventure trips, summer camp and other activities for the troop’s 25 scouts.

Johnson County AARP presentation to detail updates of services Feb. 2

Hy-Vee Inc. recalls bakery products with peanut butter distributed in seven states due to possible health risk

WEST DES MOINES– Hy-Vee Inc. is voluntarily recalling the following products made in its bakery departments because they contain peanut butter that has the potential to be contaminated with salmonella: Peanut Butter Cookies, Monster Cookies, Peanut Butter Reese’s Pieces Cookies, Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies, Lunchbox Reese’s Pieces Cookies, Lunchbox Peanut Butter Cookies, People Chow Party Mix and Assorted Truffle Fudge. All sell-by dates are included in this recall. The products are sold in various packaging and quantities and have a Hy-Vee price label attached.

My neighbor wants to read it.” (A tactful way of saying, “I want my book back before you begin to think it belongs to you.” A thoroughly justified concern, as I become quite possessive of a book after I’ve read it– especially if I enjoyed it a great deal.)
