Council candidate forum Oct. 26

NORTH LIBERTY– The League of Women Voters of Johnson County has scheduled a forum for North Liberty City Council candidates. The Candidates Forum will be held at 7 p.m., Oct. 26, at the North Liberty City Council Chambers. Audience members will be asked to submit written questions to be answered by all candidates.
The League encourages all to attend the forum, bring a question, and vote on Nov. 8.

Stone Soup Supper to be Oct. 30

NORTH LIBERTY– The third annual Stone Soup Supper to benefit the North Liberty Food & Clothing Pantry will take place on Sunday, Oct. 30, at the South Slope Community Center, 980 N. Front St., North Liberty, from 5-7 p.m. A meal and silent auction will occur during the event. Proceeds will go toward pantry operations.

Register now for Moonlight Hayrack Ride this Friday night

NORTH LIBERTY– Registration for the annual Moonlight Hayrack Ride ends this Thursday, Oct. 13. The ride takes place at Colony Farm off Front Street in North Liberty on Friday, Oct. 14, with the rain date of Saturday, Oct. 15.
The fun begins at 6 p.m., with rides ending at 8 p.m. Other goodies and activities will continue until 9:30 p.m.

CCA post-high school education forum Oct. 25

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana High School will host a forum on college admissions, applications and overall post high school preparedness Oct. 25 at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center. Speakers will include Doug Bannon, head of admissions at Kirkwood Community College; Laura Goddard, admissions representative from the University of Iowa; and Molly Jorgensen, admissions representative from Coe College.
This event is not for just 11th and 12th grade students, but to help any student get an edge on college expectations and admissions requirements. All parents are encouraged to attend.

Spaghetti dinner Oct. 28 will benefit Bergthold family

NORTH LIBERTY– The First United Methodist Church of North Liberty will hold an All You Can Eat Spaghetti Dinner on Friday, Oct. 28, from 5-8 p.m. at the church, located at 85 N. Jones Blvd. The cost is $8 for adults and $5 for kids.
Proceeds will go to Donnie Bergthold and his family to help with medical expenses incurred from his motorcycle accident on July 16, 2011. Bergthold sustained several serious injuries to his bones and organs.

Tiffin will hold Halloween decorating contest

TIFFIN– Tiffin’s Halloween Decorating Contest will be Sunday, Oct. 30, from 6-8 p.m. Judges will be touring the community judging decorations. Categories have been expanded this year, with first and second place for: Best Overall display; Best Business display, Best Single Family Home display, Best Mobile Home Park display and Best Multiple Housing Unit display. Any residence within the city limits of Tiffin will be eligible for the competition.

West manages to get past CR Kennedy, 35-28

CEDAR RAPIDS– Coach Brian Sauser wasn’t the happiest man in Kingston Stadium last Thursday night, even though his West High Trojans defeated the Kennedy Cougars.
“We’ve got to play better football,” Sauser said.
The Trojans played just well enough to escape Kingston with a 35-28 win, but it almost went down to the wire. West held a 21-7 halftime advantage, but the two teams traded touchdowns throughout the second half.
The Cougars scored first with 4:56 left in the first quarter on a 41-yard run, and a good point-after-touchdown kick made it 7-0 Cougars.

Clippers volleyball sweeps Independence 3-0

TIFFIN– Brian Bronzynski’s Clear Creek Amana (CCA) varsity volleyball squad improved to 17-7-0 on the season and posted its fourth consecutive win Tuesday night with a 3-0 victory over the Mustangs of Independence.
“We were able to get off to a fast start because of our blocking and hitting against a pretty young Mustang team” Coach Bronzynski said. “That set the tone for the whole match.”
In the first game, CCA quickly built a 12-4 lead on a Tara Walls kill. The Clippers cruised to the 25-12 win, their lead never threatened.

CCA remains winless on the field

VAN HORNE– The long drought of wins continued for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers last Friday evening as they went on the road to Benton Community and fell 23-20 in the closest game of the season.
The Bobcats scored in the fourth quarter to take the lead and a potential winning CCA score was wiped out by penalty in the closing minutes.

NL council candidates offer brief statements

NORTH LIBERTY–North Liberty voters will go to the polls Nov. 8 to elect three people to the North Liberty City Council. The terms of current council members Coleen Chipman, Terry Donahue and Chris Hoffman will expire in December 2011.
The City of North Liberty received petitions from all three incumbents hoping for re-election, as well as one additional candidate intending to run on the Nov. 8 ballot. Newcomer Matt Zacek has thrown his hat into the ring, leaving four candidates to vie for the three available seats.
