Seven dual wins

SOLON– The Solon varsity wrestling team went undefeated in seven dual meets this week, raising their dual meet record to 17 wins and 2 losses. The previous record for dual meet victories by a Solon team in one season was 15, set during the 2000-01 season. On Thursday, Jan. 19, the team posted wins over Anamosa, DeWitt Central and Lisbon. Saturday, in a dual meet tournament held at Center Point-Urbana, the team downed Linn-Mar JV, Mid-Prairie, New London, and CP-U.

Spartans double-up Sabres

The Solon boys basketball team shot the ball well, rebounded well and had contributions from a lot of players on the way to routing Central DeWitt, 61-31, last Tuesday in DeWitt.
The Spartans jumped out to a 16-3 first quarter lead and never looked back, holding the Sabres to only nine points in the first half. Randall was able to empty his bench in the fourth quarter.
Nine different players scored for Solon and 10 came down with a rebound.

Lady Spartans drop two

SOLON– Things aren’t going to get any easier for the Solon girls as they head out this week to play the conference’s two top teams.
The Lady Spartans dropped below .500 last week, losing at home against Central DeWitt and on the road against Iowa City Regina.

The scoop on safe shoveling

SOLON– So, the white stuff has made its return to Iowa. Along with the joys of snowmen, sledding, and skiing comes the dreaded task of shoveling those driveways and sidewalks.
While shoveling can become an almost daily chore in Solon, it can also provide some much needed exercise in the winter months. However, shoveling incorrectly can put you at great risk for back injuries and a whole lot of discomfort. Here are some key tips to avoiding injury if you must shovel:

Proposed budget good news for fans of status quo

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty City Council got a sneak peek at next year’s budget numbers last week, and the good news is things are holding steady.
Most significantly for North Liberty taxpayers, if the proposed budget does meet with council approval, the city’s property tax rate is expected to remain unchanged, at $11.03 per $1,000 of assessed value before the state’s rollback formula is applied.

SOLON– Suddenly, everyone has a lot of questions about a practice that has been around since the 1970s.
This week, Coralville city officials will have to provide some answers.

Forecast: crowded with a chance of gain

NORTH LIBERTY— For the second time this month, the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) School Board met to discuss options for handling continued enrollment growth. The board met in its regular monthly work session on Wednesday, Jan. 18, at North Bend Elementary.

Tech report

IOWA CITY– The Iowa City Community School District’s (ICCSD) information services department got back their report card, called an information technology simplification assessment (ITSA), from Dell, the computer company based in Texas.
Blake Chism, a simplification practice executive for Dell, presented the report, which cost the district $41,000. Physical Plant and Equipment levy (PPEL) funds paid for the cost of the district’s study.
Chism is the former Director of Information Services at the Orange Unified School District in California, the job now held by David Dude for ICCSD.

Sons of the Oxford American Legion sponsor spaghetti dinner Jan. 28

OXFORD– The Oxford Sons of the American Legion– Squadron 537 will sponsor an all-you-can-eat spaghetti dinner on Saturday, Jan. 28, from 3 until 7 p.m. at the Oxford American Legion, 128 East Main St., Oxford. The cost is $7 adults and $5 kids 12 and under.
Proceeds benefit English River Outfitters and the Oxford American Legion.

Mind-Body course at NL’s MercyCare

NORTH LIBERTY– Feel better with mind and body skills. Mercy Medical Center is offering a course focused on the connection between your physical health and the state of your mind and spirit. Simply by learning some easy skills you can gain more control over stress, pain and fatigue– and just feel better overall.
The course is facilitated by Helen Kudos, social work clinician at Mercy Family Counseling, who has advanced training in mind-body medicine.
