What to do in your Iowa garden this month

IOWA CITY– Wow. What a spring– or is it summer? Either way, gardens are going gangbusters and it’s a challenge to keep up.
The last average frost date is almost here. It’s May 10 for southern Iowa and May 15 for northern Iowa, though this year, you’re probably safe sneaking things in a few days early. So tuck in those tomato plants, peppers, basil, marigolds, impatiens and others after this date.
Plant gladiolus corms, canna rhizomes, and tuberous begonia tubers now the soil is adequately warm.

F.W. Kent Park

No lifeguards are provided; swim at your own risk; swim only at designated beach; no alcohol allowed on beach.
Cans, bottles and food items are not permitted in the beach area.
For further information contact the Johnson County Conservation Board at 319-645-2315.

Free CPR training

IOWA CITY– In honor of National Emergency Medical Services (EMS) week, May 20 through 26, the Johnson County Ambulance Service is offering free CPR training for the public. It is important that more people survive cardiac arrest. The greater the number of people who know CPR, the better someone’s chances of surviving. Heart attack, drowning or other problems may cause someone’s heart to stop pumping blood. This is called cardiac arrest. If you give a person CPR right away they are more likely to survive. Most cardiac arrests happen at home with family members.

Food For Thought

May has way too much going for it, especially if you have a child in school. There are May Day, Mother’s Day, proms, sports award ceremonies, graduations, track meets, school programs, concerts and plays. (Do schools still have class picnics and senior skip-day?) And, in my family, there were birthdays to celebrate. Those birthdays were at the top of the list because they are personal celebrations for individuals rather than holidays for everyone or days set aside for large groups of people.
