Register for Fifth Annual Solon Beef Days Kickball Tournament

SOLON– The Fifth Annual Solon Beef Days Kickball Tournament will be held Friday, July 15, and Saturday, July 16. Entry Fee $100 per team. Contact Todd Linderbaum at 319-325-1408 for team registration or information.

They said it right there on the six o’clock news - “A college education is no longer worth the cost.” Then, they added the information that the average student graduates from college with $17,000 of debt. Doesn’t sound like so much to me – the price of a new car, and not an extravagantly luxurious one at that. Still, quite a bit more than my Social Security checks amount to over a year. Definitely nothing to sneeze at.

William Patrick Mellon Heintz, 35, beloved and cherished son of Sharon Mellon, and Tetsugen Eric Heintz and Kaye Bair, died unexpectedly in his home in Portland, Ore., on June 14, 2011.

Leonard Douglas Joslin, Jr., 64, of Marion, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, June 25, 2011, at his home surrounded by his loved ones. Funeral Service was June 29 at Spirit of Faith Family Church in Cedar Rapids by Pastor Jay Eberly. Burial was at Oak Shade Cemetery, Marion, with military honors.


James McClintock

James R. McClintock, 79, of Morley, died Saturday, June 25, 2011, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids.
A celebration of his life service was held June 30 at Lahey Funeral Home in Olin. Private graveside services were in the Greene Center Cemetery, Morley, Iowa, with military honors.


Earl Miller

Earl R. Miller, 98, of Solon, died Sunday, June 26, 2011, at the Solon Nursing Care Center.
Funeral Mass was held June 30 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Solon, with burial at the Oakland Cemetery in Solon. The Reverends James Vrba and Christopher J. Miller (great-nephew) officiated at a parish rosary on June 29. Memorial donations can be made in Earl’s memory to St. Mary’s Church, Iowa City Hospice, or the congregate meals of Solon. Edith Miller

Edith Catherine (Slifka) Miller, 96, of Elkader, died Saturday, June 25, 2011, at Central Community Hospital in Elkader. She was born on June 7, 1915, in Cresco, the daughter of Michael and Leona (Lewis) Slifka. Edith attended and graduated from Cresco High School.

The Game Time league opened Wednesday, June 22, in North Liberty and it was nice to see the five new Iowa recruits in action.
The very first game had Bethany Doolittle, a 6-3 center from Minnesota, going up Morgan Johnson, a 6-5 starter the last two seasons at center.
Bethany actually held her own against Morgan. She was 7-10 from the floor and hit a 3-pointer to help her team to an 85-61 win.

Fox Ridge friends come together in Solon

SOLON– It was all started by one innocent Fourth of July picnic.
Last year, Kathy Borowski, a resident of the Fox Ridge housing development who moved to Solon with her husband to be closer to her family, decided to get to know her neighbors a bit better by organizing a picnic on the Fourth of July.
As the fiesta commenced, Borowski and the others noticed that most of her neighbors shared an interesting connection: all of them had also moved to Solon from somewhere else in Iowa to be closer to their families.
