Solon Methodist hosting blood drive June 8

SOLON– The Solon United Methodist Church will be hosting a blood drive on Wednesday, June 8, from 2:30-6:30 p.m. in the Family Life Center.
Giving blood takes about an hour, and the difference it can make for patients who receive lifesaving transfusions can last a lifetime. If you are interested in donating, please contact Rick Havel at 530-1596 or rickhavel@gmail.com. 


Music on Main Street set to begin June 8

SOLON– Music on Main plans are underway for the 2011 summer entertainment program that will begin June 8 with The Hopping Iguanas. All concerts begin at 7 p.m. on the bandstand on Main Street.  Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy an hour or two of music each Wednesday evening this summer. Please contact Sue Samek ssamek1@southslope.net or 430-4223; or Nancy Upmeyer  nakudon@southslope.net or 624-2944 if you can provide entertainment or are able to be a sponsor.

“I got my marijuana license right here,” the man in the coffee shop told me, then the shop owner pitched in, “My license is by the cash register.” The topic came up while having a friendly chat with people in rural Colorado.
Sabra and I traveled to the state last week to visit her family.
Our first stop was Denver, where her parents live, and then we moved on to Crestone, where her sister and her husband live.


Christopher Bok

Christopher John Bok, 44, of North Liberty died Sunday, May 29, 2011, after living each day to the fullest and giving the gift of humor to everyone he met. A celebration of Chris’ life will be held at St. Thomas More Catholic Church in Coralville.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Miracle Burn Camp, c/o the Burn Treatment center, c/o Alison Pauley, 200 Hawkins Drive, Iowa City, IA 52242. Lensing Funeral and Cremation Services in Iowa City is handling arrangements.


Mary Cooling

Mary Carolyn (Koss) Cooling, 69, daughter of the late Otto Koss and Gladys (Louvar-Koss) Stahle, died Friday, June 3, 2011.  A visitation will be held on June 25, from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at Brosh Chapel in Solon.
Mary was born Jan. 22, 1942, in Solon. She married Dallas Myron Cooling of Solon on June 20, 1959.
She is survived by her husband; her children Randy (Laura), Rhonda (David) Murphy, Richard (Teresa), Ron, Ray (Connie) and Ross; her sisters, Joyce Cooling, Delores Kuch and Shirley Jacobsen; eight grandchildren and three great-grand children.


Charles Harsock

A private burial for Charles A. Harsock, 78, of Norway, was held June 1. Charles died Thursday, May 26, 2011, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a brief illness.
Charles Allen Hartsock was born Sept. 8, 1931, in Hills, the son of Ernest L. and Clarice (Gilder) Harstock. He graduated from Oxford High School in 1949. He was united in marriage to Bernice Rae Kessler in Cedar Rapids in February 1956.
Local survivors include one sister, Laura (Maynard) Poggenphol of North Liberty.
A general memorial fund has been established.


Jack Hilsenbeck

Jack Hilsenbeck, 68, of Solon, died from a courageous battle with lung cancer, Friday, June 3, 2011, at his home surrounded by his family. Funeral Mass was celebrated Tuesday, June 7, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Solon.  Burial followed in St. Mary’s Cemetery where full military rites were conducted.  


Helen Little

Helen Ann (Tefr) Little, 85, formerly of Cedar Rapids and Ely, died Monday, May 30, in Albuquerque, N.M. Visitation was held at Cedar Memorial Park Funeral Home on Friday, June 3, with a funeral mass at St. Ludmila Catholic Church on June 4 with Rev. Thomas McDermott officiating. Burial followed at Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery. She is survived by her only child, daughter Sally A. Little of Albuquerque, NM; sister Anna Mae (Robert) Anderson of Novato, Calif.; brothers Ron Landergott of Cedar Rapids, and Charles (Sandra) Landergott of Gainesville, Ga.; sister-in-law Mary V.


Edward Teslik

Edward LeRoy Teslik, 74, of Keller, Texas, formerly of Swisher and Cedar Rapids, died Nov. 24, 2010, of a sudden illness in Fort Worth, Texas. Graveside services for family and friends were held Saturday, June 4, at Riverside Cemetery. Father Rich Adam, pastor of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Riverside, presided. Following the graveside service, a potluck dinner at Trinity United Methodist Church, and a Teslik Family Reunion took place.


Hawk Talk

The last couple of years I’ve been doing a flashback to talk about the Hawkeye football season plus basketball, wrestling and what was going on in the world at that time.
This time we’re going back to the year 1977.
Once again I have to thank the late Al Grady for getting most of my information on the Hawkeye football team. I used the book Al wrote, “25 Years with the Fighting Hawkeyes,” and I still enjoy reading it today.
Bob Commings was head coach for the Hawkeye football team, Lute Olsen was the head man for basketball and Dan Gable led the wrestlers.
