Lady Spartans break Mustangs a second time, 44-34

Holtkamp and LaDage lead Solon over Mount Vernon

MOUNT VERNON– Solon sophomore Kaia Holtkamp and senior Jenna LaDage led the Lady Spartans past the Mustangs, 44-34, on Friday, Jan. 24, at Mount Vernon High School, for the second time since December of 2009.
The Lady Spartans built a six-point lead in the first quarter, outscoring the Mustangs, 11-5, and matched Mount Vernon in the second quarter with 10 points apiece, to maintain the six point lead at the half, 21-15. Besting the ‘Stangs by a point in the third, 8-7, Solon entered the final 12 minutes of play leading, 29-22.

Mount Vernon escapes with 70-68 win

SOLON– “They left it all on the floor,” Solon head Coach Matt Lesan said. “Some of those bounces that aren't going our way will start to change.”
Everything was looking good for a Spartan upset of two-loss Mount Vernon Jan. 24 in Solon.
But the Mustangs retook the lead when it mattered, and the 70-68 loss dropped the Solon varsity boys to a third straight loss and a 3-11 record. Mount Vernon improved to 11-2.
The Spartans held a 38-33 advantage at the half in a see-saw battle which featured some hot shooting and some aggressive defense.

Solon Sons of the American Legion host annual Famous Kettle-Fried Chicken Dinner Feb. 1

SOLON– The Solon Sons of the American Legion will host their annual Famous Kettle-Fried Chicken Dinner on Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Solon Legion. The menu includes all-you-can-eat delicious kettle-fried chicken, cheesy potatoes, oven-baked beans, bread, dessert and drink. The Legion will serve from 5-7:30 p.m., with take-out available. Tickets are $10 for adults; $5 for children 6-12; and children 5 and under eat free.

CORALVILLE– Golfletics is a perfect place to discover the game of golf.
The new performance center features two cutting-edge public simulator bays where you can play some of the best courses in the world with no weather issues. In the back is a 600 square-foot gym and an additional instruction and club-fitting bay.
“It’s kind of a marriage of all my experience,” explained Solon native and North Liberty resident Austin Kopp.

SOLON– A Solon Community Health and Wellness Fair will be held Sunday, Feb. 2, from 12:30-2:30 p.m. at the Solon Community Center. The event is free to the public.

Vietnam Veterans Memorial traveling wall coming to Solon?

Council approves $3,000 of $7,000 tab

SOLON– A traveling version of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial may be coming to Solon in August.
Scott Rozinek, a member of the Solon American Legion, approached the Solon City Council for partial funding of the proposal at a Jan. 22 meeting.
Council members agreed to fund a $3,000 down-payment.
The total cost, Rozinek said, would be $6,000, plus lodging for a driver and any other associated local expenses.
Rozinek told city representatives he had previously assisted in the displaying of a Vietnam traveling memorial wall in West Branch.

Ed Hadenfeldt home tourney canceled

CEDAR RAPIDS– It’s been a frustrating couple of weekends for Solon’s varsity wrestlers.
The Prairie City-Monroe tournament scheduled for Jan. 11 was canceled due to winter weather, and then the forecast did not look good heading into the weekend of Solon’s home Ed Hadenfeldt Invitational Jan. 18.

Lady Spartans squeak out 46-42 win over West Delaware

First road win of 2020

MANCHESTER– The Lady Spartans squeaked out a four-point road victory, 46-42, over the West Delaware Hawks for their first travel triumph of 2020 on Monday, Jan. 13, in Manchester.
The varsity girls’ basketball matchup was postponed from Friday, Jan. 10.
It was a dead heat for both teams at the end of the first quarter, knotted at 11-all. The Hawks put up another 11 points to Solon’s four in the second quarter for a 22-15 lead at the half.
Solon bested West Delaware, 14-10, in the third quarter, cutting the Hawks’ lead to 32-29 to start the final period.

Hayden Taylor nominated for 2020 Dan Gable Mr. and Ms. Wrestler of the Year

Fans can vote through Feb. 7

BOONE– Hayden Taylor of Solon is among a handful of Iowa high school wrestlers nominated for the Dan Gable Mr. and Ms. Wrestler of the Year Awards.
Fans have the ability to vote, once per day, for their top wrestler in each category until Feb. 7, when votes will be tallied from IWCOA and the fan vote to reach the top three. The finalists will be invited to IAWrestle’s premier event War at the West Gym, on March 14, held on the University of Northern Iowa campus, where a winner will be announced in each category prior to the event.

Solon boys break six-game skid

Spartans down Maquoketa. 68-39

SOLON– It was good to get a win.
After dropping the previous two games by a combined four points, Solon’s varsity boys’ basketball team blew out the Maquoketa Cardinals for a 68-39 home victory Jan. 16.
Despite playing in the Solon Middle School, the Spartans tore the game open in the third quarter, turning a 10-point halftime margin into a 22-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.
“I loved how our guys responded to getting challenged,” noted Head Coach Matt Lesan.
This time, Solon took a 19-11 first-quarter lead and didn’t look back.
