Spartans keep lid on Mustangs

Villagrana’s free throws lift boys at Beckman

SOLON– The Solon Spartans received a good growing experience courtesy of Dyersville Beckman Friday night.
Solon came out of Dyersville with a slim 57-55 win thanks to a pair of free throws by Solon point guard Emilio Villagrana.
“It was a very hard-fought, extremely physical game,” said head coach Brad Randall of the win. “You come out of there with a win, and you’ve really done something.”

TIFFIN– Given a chance to air their concerns, several Tiffin residents made it clear; they are not keen on high-density housing.

Women of Troy hold off Dubuque Hempstead Mustangs

West girls up to the challenge

IOWA CITY– The West High Women of Troy repelled a threat from the Mustangs of Dubuque Hempstead Tuesday, Jan. 8, pulling off a 55-46 MVC victory on their home court.
Laynie Whitehead put West on the scoreboard early in the first period, and West took a 9-1 lead prompting the Mustangs to call for a time-out. Ally Disterhoft hit the first of two 3-pointers late in the quarter for a 16-7 lead. The Mustangs galloped back in the second, out-scoring West 13-11. West held a 27-20 lead at the half, with 12 of those points coming from Disterhoft.

Irrigation meters to incur fees year-round if NL ordinance passes

NORTH LIBERTY– North Liberty residents who like a lush, green lawn may have to pay more for it in upcoming seasons.
Last Tuesday, Jan. 8, the North Liberty City Council passed the first reading of an ordinance amendment to change the way the city bills for irrigation meters.

Trojans trounce Little Hawks on the mat

IOWA CITY– The West vs. City High rivalry took to the wrestling mat Thursday night at West High as the Trojans easily handled the east-siders 69-6 in varsity action.
Tristen Bowers, Kegan Wakefield, Tyler Hebl, John Milani, Jackson Voigt, Donovan Doyle, Colin Foerstner, Jakeb Bakken and Chris Walters all won by fall.

Solon girls snap three-game skid

SOLON– Bouncing back from three straight road losses, the Lady Spartans needed a little home cooking.
They got it against Dyersville Beckman Friday night.
Solon’s girls defeated Beckman, 61-54, to snap a three game losing streak, all of them coming in visitor’s uniforms.
The Lady Spartans had chalked up narrow defeats to Western Dubuque and non-divisional WaMaC foe Clear Creek Amana before a 50-39 loss at Mount Vernon last Tuesday, Jan. 8.
Solon had some opportunities, but cold shooting put the Lady Spartans in a bit of a hole against the Mustangs.

Solon put three in finals at Hadenfeldt Invitational

SOLON– The Solon wrestling team advanced three to the finals of the Ed Hadenfeldt Invitational at Solon this past Saturday. Brian Haight at 132 pounds, Matt Quinn at 184, and heavyweight Logan Linderbaum finished runner-up for the Spartans.
West Branch won the tournament with 165 points, outdistancing Iowa Valley. Solon finished in seventh place.
Other place winners for Solon included :
Bailey Redlinger: sixth at 106 pounds;
Louis Gnida: third at 113 pounds;
Trevor Yahr: sixth at 126 pounds;
Danny Whitmore: fifth at 195 pounds;
Max Turkal: sixth at 220 pounds.

Third annual Oscar contest
The Friends of the Solon Library group is once again sponsoring a “Predict the Oscars” contest. The winner receives a prize package worth over $50 plus “first check-out” privileges for all Best Picture nominees that the library receives after the awards. Details and entry forms are available at the circulation desk, and entries are due on Feb. 23.

Living Healthy Iowa challenge begins Jan. 28

SOLON– The Live Healthy Iowa 10-Week Challenge begins Jan. 28. Invite family members, friends, neighbors or co-workers, and start a team. Teams are made of two to 10 people, including the team leader and can be registered to record activity minutes, weight loss or both. Enter under the Solon Group ID: LHISOLON. Old Gold Diner to host Solon fourth graders Jan. 23

SOLON– Old Gold Dining will be hosting a fourth grade class on Wednesday, Jan. 23.
There are usually 22 students that come, and organizers would like to have at least one senior citizen for each student. Non-seniors are also welcome with a reservation and a payment of $5 for the meal. Please try to join this fun occasion and visit with these young Solon school students. Call 624-2251 before noon the day before to make reservations. Lunch is served at 11:30 a.m., so plan to arrive by 11:15 a.m. The class that is scheduled to come this month is 4E.
