Food For Thought

It was quite a long time ago that I interviewed Clary Illian, a potter in Ely, for this newspaper. If I’m not mistaken, she hadn’t had her shop in downtown Ely for very long at the time, and when Brian, then editor, sent me off to interview her, I had never heard of her or seen any of her work. I was greatly impressed and wrote a lengthy, glowing article about her impressive array of mugs, bowls, pitchers and platters. In fact, some of what I wrote had to be cut because I had far too much to say for the allotted space in the paper.

Walkin'

Before moving on from Shepherdstown in this travelogue, I should note a couple more things that happened while in this lovely West Virginia city.
From talking with fellow cyclists, we learned something about the official detour mentioned in an earlier column. They had taken it the year before, and one of them crashed, breaking a collarbone. Score one for scofflaws.
More importantly, Sabra got to do laundry.

Hawk Talk

The Iowa Hawkeye football team has the week off and Kirk Ferentz said after the Minnesota win it was good timing.
Iowa needs to get some players like Austin Blythe, B.J. Lowery and Damon Bullock healthy to make the stretch run in the Big Ten.
This week I’ll break down the offense, defense and special teams and try to evaluate how well they have been playing.
The Hawks are 3-2, 1-0 in the Big Ten.

Offense
Who would have thought that a walk-on running back would be leading the Hawkeyes’ ground game at this point.

City seeks data for Highway 1 stoplight

SOLON– On a typical spring day, just over 11,000 vehicles cross the intersection of Highway and 5th Street in Solon.
Most of them (9,172) are either north or southbound on the Highway. The rest are heading east and west.
But that’s not enough to warrant a traffic signal at the intersection, according to a study by the Metropolitan Planning Organization of Johnson County (MPOJC).
