Senior Advocates seek funding suggestions

SOLON– The Solon Senior Advocates are seeking ideas or suggestions on how to support the many programs they provide for seniors. Advocates income relies solely on grant money, monetary awards from Beef Days committee, donations and the generosity of Bev Noska’s can redemption monies.

Education Foundation needs you

SOLON– The Solon Education Foundation (SEF) is a 501 (c) 3 charged with managing an endowment in support of the Solon Community School District (solonedfound.org). The group is seeking motivated community members interested in a volunteer position on its board of directors. The SEF meets monthly at 6 p.m. Its goals are achieved via an annual teacher-initiated grant program and by providing tax-exempt infrastructure for Partner Groups. Anyone with interest or expertise in fundraising would be particularly attractive.

41st annual Beef Days celebration

SOLON– Friday and Saturday, July 20 and 21, Solon Beef Days will hold its 41st celebration. This two-day event, traditionally starting the third Friday in July, has collected and donated over $339,000 back into the community and surrounding area since 1971.

McCaffery signs seven-year contract as head basketball coach

IOWA CITY– University of Iowa men’s basketball coach Fran McCaffery has signed a new contract to continue as the Hawkeye head basketball coach for the foreseeable future. The agreement was announced Tuesday, July 10, by UI director of athletics Gary Barta.
The seven-year agreement guarantees McCaffery a minimum average of $1.66 million annually over the length of the contract, beginning with a base salary of $1.3 million in 2012-2013. The base salary moves McCaffery to the upper half of the Big Ten Conference in comparison to his colleagues.

NORTH LIBERTY– Pickleball isn’t just a fun way to exercise, meet new people and stay healthy.
It’s also the country’s fastest growing sport, one of the newest events to be added to the national Senior Olympic Games and the latest craze in parts of Puerto Rico.
On July 1, Pickleball was also the focus of a one-day tournament at North Liberty’s Penn Meadows Park tennis complex, with participants who traveled from all over central and southeast Iowa to get in the game.

TIFFIN — Tiffin City Engineer Doug Frederick told the city council plans for the Ireland Avenue Extension for approval are still on hold, pending resolution of the Ireland Avenue and Hwy. 6 intersection and adjacent businesses. Adding to the stall is an ongoing disagreement between two local business owners whose establishments are located along the roadway.
Frederick gave his report at the Wednesday, July 11, regular meeting where John Schneider, owner of Jon’s Ice Cream Store, presented photos to the council.

JOHNSON COUNTY– Johnson County is currently under a ban against open burning.
The State Fire Marshal’s office issued a proclamation on Thursday, July 12, stating that open burning is now prohibited in Johnson County until further notice, when local fire departments determine that conditions dangerous to life or property no longer exists.
In laymen’s turns, that would be when the parched and crisp foliage finally gets a good drink of rain.

Historical Society to visit bridges of F.W. Kent Park July 19

IOWA CITY– This month’s Third Thursday is hitting the road. The Johnson County Historical Society (JCHS) will be going to Kent Park on July 19.
Join Larry Lovetinsky of the Johnson County Conservation Board on a trek around the lake at Kent Park to learn about the bridges that make up the trail. Larry will talk about how the process of repairing the bridges came to be and give some history of each bridge and what we did to each bridge along with tales from the process.
Participants will walk the length of the trail around the lake. Please meet at the boat ramp parking lot.

Aquatic Center youth triathlon Aug. 4

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Liberty Aquatic Center presents the first North Liberty Youth Triathlon, “Just Tri,” to be held on Saturday, Aug. 4. Hosted in conjunction with Tri-Fit Agape, LLC, the event features various distances for ages six to 14 years. The race starts and ends at the Community Center, 520 W. Cherry St. Sign-in begins at 8 a.m. on Aug. 4, with the race beginning at 9 a.m. A brief awards ceremony will follow the race.
