The Moving Wall coming in August

SOLON– A living tribute to Vietnam Veterans is coming to Johnson County in August.
Celebrating its 100th anniversary, The Solon American Legion Stinocher Post #460 is proudly sharing its commitment to honor and respect those who have made the ultimate sacrifice by sponsoring the display of The Moving Wall Aug.13-17.

Respite Services

SOLON– Solon Retirement Village has always offered short term respite stays to help out caregivers who need a break, have to go out of town, health circumstances etc, but is excited to announce the availability now of daily respite services.
Melissa Reed, Campus Administrator states, "Respite services offers a win/win situation for everyone in the family not only the person who attends the program. It is perfect for caregivers who are still trying to work, manage their home and care for a family member."

Calendar revisited

School board considers earlier start for 2020-21 school year Input sought at March 19 meeting

SOLON– One day can make a difference.
The Solon Community School District (SCSD) Board of Education voted to start the 2021-2022 school year for students on Monday, Aug. 23, 2021, and will consider making a similar change for the 2020-21 school year at a March 19 meeting.
The new calendar and the possible revision were discussed at a Feb. 20 meeting of the board.
Superintendent Davis Eidhal presented the proposed calendar, explaining the district had taken a different approach this year.

A ton of fish, a ton of fun

Legion Friday night fish fries return Feb. 28 Raffle proceeds to help bring traveling Vietnam memorial

SOLON– This year, there will be plenty of fish.
In 2019, the Solon American Legion attracted the biggest crowds ever for its traditional Friday night fish fries.
Typically, over the course of seven Fridays heading into Easter, the Legion would draw an average of 230 people each evening.
“And last year we averaged over 350 per night,” explained Legion member Denny Hansen.
Last year, organizers decided to offer shrimp each week and moved the serving line out of the kitchen, he noted, and it made a big difference.
But they encountered an immediate problem– they hadn’t ordered enough food.

Stronger Together

Booster Club and school board to get control of fundraisers

SOLON– There are too many fundraisers.
So, the Solon Community School District (SCSD) Board of Education has endorsed a proposal from the Solon Booster Club to bring all athletic fundraisers under one roof.
At a board meeting Feb. 20, Booster Club Treasurer Adam Stahle unveiled “Stronger Together,” a project aimed to strengthen the club’s sagging membership and address the district’s concern over the number of groups seeking funds on behalf of school programs.

Two champs!

First-ever twin titles for Solon

DES MOINES– It was the first time in school history Solon had two state champs in the same year.
It was also the first time Solon had a two-time winner.
Hayden Taylor and Jax Flynn ascended to the top of the podium at the Iowa Individual Wrestling Tournament in Des Moines, capturing titles at 145 and 170 pounds, and propelling Solon’s wrestling team to a fourth place finish in Class 2A.
For Taylor, it was the second consecutive title; Flynn became the seventh state champ in school history.
Both had to overcome big challenges on their way.

CLANG! CLANG! CLANG!

Firehouse fundraiser keeps chugging along $4,000-8,000 coming in weekly

SOLON– Over 550 people donated to the Solon Firehouse campaign, representing 28 states, 29 counties in Iowa and five countries.
Between cash and commitments, the Solon Firefighter Association raised about $670,000, according to Solon firefighter Greg Morris.
Morris has been working to raise funds for a year and a half, and the donations continue to come in at a rate of between $4,000-8,000 a week.
“That’s nothing to sneeze at,” he noted.
On a single recent day, Morris received contributions from people in Nebraska and Ohio.
“Which makes what we’re doing fun,” he said.

Record calls for 2019

Solon firefighters log busiest year ever

SOLON– “We set a record again this year,” Chief Bob Siddell reported. “Four-hundred-fifty-eight calls. The most we’ve ever done as a fire department.”
Siddell presented the fire department’s 2019 annual report at a joint meeting of the Solon Tri-Township Emergency Response Agency and Solon City Council Jan. 22 in City Hall.
“And you can see the trend from 2014 (346 calls) until now is not going down,” he said. “With Solon growing, with the area outside of the community growing, those numbers I think are going to continue to increase.”

On the climb

Registrations increase for 3rd annual Lake MacBride Fat Tire Classic Feb. 15

SOLON– The Lake MacBride Fat Tire Classic was not designed to be like other bicycle races.
Winding in and around Lake Macbride State Park, the course has climbed 2,300 feet of elevation over 20 miles, something designer Nate Kullbom said is “nearly impossible to do in Iowa.”
Kullbom, store manager for Sugar Bottom Bikes in North Liberty, said some riders felt the route was too difficult.
The third annual Lake MacBride Fat Tire Classic on Saturday, Feb. 15, will feature only 1,700 feet of climbing in the 25-mile race, he said.
“That’s still a lot.”

New finance officer settles in

One job leads to another for Roman Meyers

SOLON– There was a silver lining when Roman Meyers missed out on the Solon Parks and Recreation Director job.
Meyers, 27, and his wife Megan had moved to Solon after she accepted a fourth-grade teaching position at Solon Intermediate School, and he was at Solon City Hall to vote in a school board election when he noticed a job posting for the city’s recreation director.
With a degree in kinesiology and a lifelong love of sports, Meyers decided to apply and went through the interview process.

Solon boys roll past South Tama, 70-36

Spartans add road loss at West Delaware

TAMA– Solon kept South Tama winless.
Solon’s varsity boys notched their fifth basketball win of the season Feb. 4 in Tama, never looking back after an early lead for a 70-36 victory over the Trojans.
The Spartans were without leading scorer David Bluder, who suffered a sprained ankle in a Jan. 31 game against Beckman Catholic.
Stepping up to the plate was the entire team.

Spartans sectional champs

Wrestlers qualify for regional duals, district meet

FAIRFIELD– With six first-place finishes and two runners-up, Solon’s varsity wrestlers ran away with the title at a sectional meet Feb. 8 in Fairfield.
“Once the postseason starts you can throw out the records as everyone starts the day with an equal shot of advancing,” noted Solon Head Coach Blake Williams. “I thought our team did well considering we have been battling some illnesses throughout the week.”
