Still No. 1

Lady Spartans sweep Maquoketa at home

SOLON– The Lady Spartans had yet to shut out an opponent at home.
Strike that off the list.
Solon took care of business against conference foe Maquoketa 3-0 last Tuesday, Sept. 16, moving to 12-3 on the year and atop (with several others) the WaMaC East Division.
The Lady Spartans dispatched the Cardinals easily in the first two sets by identical scores of 25-16, then fended off the dreaded swing in momentum and put away the match in the third set, 25-20.
Jordan Smith and Jordan Runge combined for 19 of Solon’s 34 kills and seven of the team’s eight service aces (Smith had five).

Defense smothers Indians in 21-7 win

Solon holds Marion out of end zone for three quarters

SOLON– Following a shutout loss to Cedar Rapids Xavier, the Solon Spartan football team was looking for improvement.
Friday’s 21-7 home win against the Marion Indians was a step in the right direction.
“We had a better week of practice,” summarized head coach Kevin Miller.
Solon also had the services of starting running back Brandon Kramer, who missed the Xavier game due to injury.
Kramer and quarterback Brandan Childs logged over 150 rushing yards for the Spartans offensively, helping to fuel three scoring drives.

Girls unbeaten at home

Fall to CR Prairie at Linn-Mar tournament

SOLON– Even when they were down a handful of points, there was the feeling the Solon Lady Spartans would come back.
And come back they did, overcoming a four-point deficit to win the first set 25-22 against the Williamsburg Raiders Sept. 11, and eventually taking the match, 3-1.
Solon, ranked atop the Class 3A schools in volleyball, took the second set 25-16, but left the door open for the Raiders after Williamsburg captured the third game, 25-18. The Lady Spartans righted the ship and put away the Raiders 25-18 in the fourth set.

Flying Colors

OXFORD– It’s a colorful way to make some green.
Clear Creek Elementary (CCE) will host the second annual CCE Color Fun Run/Walk 5K Saturday, Sept. 27, at 9 a.m., and the public is invited.
The race/walk is open to anyone who wants to have fun and is up for helping a good cause.
CCE’s Parent Teacher Group (PTG) was searching for a way to involve more families in its annual school-wide fundraisers. PTG members often heard similar comments from parents when it came time for kids to sell wrapping paper, magazines, chocolate or other traditional fundraising products door-to-door.

Let victory ring

CCA denies Washington 20-17

TIFFIN– Clear Creek Amana (CCA) coach Matt Hughes summed up his team’s 20-17 win over the Washington Demons in one word. “Unbelievable!”
“I’m so proud of these kids,” Hughes said. “I’ve never seen a group of kids that took what we did in the off-season, and the hard work that they put in, and applied it to the football field for four quarters. They had a lot of things that went against them tonight, had some adversity, but they came up and they never quit. They kept their heads up and they had confidence they could do it.”

Solon library display honors railroads and railroaders

All aboard at the Whistle Stop

SOLON– In May of 1869 the Burlington, Cedar Rapids & Minneapolis Railway Company began construction of a railroad in Burlington. By 1871 the line had extended to Cedar Rapids via West Branch, Elmira, Oasis, Solon and Ely. In 1875 the railroad went into receivership and was sold to the Burlington, Cedar Rapids & Northern in 1876 before being purchased by the Chicago, Rock Island & Pacific in 1885.
100 years later, in 1985, the Rock Island Railroad, better known as “The Rock,” was gone, it’s line through Solon completely abandoned and later pulled up.

Easy Win

CCA 40, Mid-Prairie 6

TIFFIN– After the Clippers of Clear Creek Amana (CCA) suffered a heartbreaking season-opening overtime loss on the road in Center Point, they retooled and rearmed for a week two visit from Mid-Prairie (Wellman) in a Class 3A-Class 2A non-district match-up.
The result was a 40-6 shelling of the Golden Hawks, improving the Clippers’ record to 1-1.

OT THRILLER

Solon snaps Regina’s 56-game winning streak in overtime

SOLON– Those who were there will likely remember it for a long time.
The Solon Spartans defeated Iowa City Regina 29-28 in overtime Friday, ending the Regals’ 56-game winning streak in an exciting, thrill-a-minute high school football game.
Junior quarterback Brandan Childs connected with senior receiver Connor Ham for a two-point conversion in overtime to wrench victory away from a Regina team that had taken a 28-21 lead.

Schematic design for Liberty High School

North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– A high school can be the heart of a community, and the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) is on pace to bring a new one to North Liberty.
As the school board heard reports on policy and progress at its Aug. 26 meeting, included was a schematic design proposal from SVPA Architects, Inc. (SVPA) for Liberty High School, a 250,000 square foot facility on 76 acres at the intersection of Dubuque Street and North Liberty Road in North Liberty.

A night of firsts for the Trojans

West gets by Cougars 12-9 in season home opener

IOWA CITY– “Firsts” were in abundance Friday, Aug. 29, at West High as the Trojans welcomed the Cedar Rapids Kennedy Cougars for week one of varsity football.
It was the first official varsity game on the new synthetic turf. It was the first game for Garett Hartwig as head coach after taking over for Brian Sauser in June. It was the first career catch for junior Gabe Huinker that won the game for West.

Work slowed, but still underway

Weather, floods delay Mehaffey Bridge replacement project

JOHNSON COUNTY– The bridge may take longer than expected.
Replacing Mehaffey Bridge over the Iowa River between Solon and North Liberty is a four-stage project that began last spring, with an anticipated completion date of November 2014. However, excessive rainfall earlier this season brought water levels under the bridge too high for construction to take place, delaying work by weeks.
