The king will be announced at the end of the Homecoming Parade and pep rally Wednesday night and the queen will be crowned at halftime of the varsity game Friday.

Spartans bounce back for 45-13 win over Panthers

MOUNT PLEASANT– The Solon varsity football team returned to its winning ways Friday night.
The Spartans traveled south to Mount Pleasant for their first road game and came away with a convincing 45-13 win.
But Solon started slow and trailed for much of the first quarter before getting it into gear.
“We allowed them to march the ball down the field and score on their first series. In the process, they chewed up an entire six minutes,” said head coach Kevin Miller. “In the second quarter we settled in and executed on both sides of the ball.”

One for the books

NL Community Library hosts grand opening

NORTH LIBERTY– It was a celebration for the books.
An estimated 1,400 people visited the North Liberty Community Library’s grand opening event on Sunday, Sept. 8. The community was invited to celebrate the completion of the library’s $3.3 million, 11,000 square foot expansion and renovation.
The updated space now includes more meeting and study rooms, a new periodical area, a dedicated teen lounge, new Internet and computer stations, a children’s story time room and a children’s reading area, as well as several comfortable sitting areas spread throughout the library.

Aw, shucks!

Solon schools lunchrooms to serve local farm food

SOLON– Corn means something more to us here in Iowa, and nothing shows it off better than events like the corn-shucking party at Solon High School Aug. 25.
The party, which ended when the work was done, was expected to take place from 2 until 5 p.m. Surprisingly, though, it finished an hour and a half after the fun started. The corn was served to students during the first week of school during lunch.
“It was great to see everybody working together,” Laurie Broghammer said as she cleaned up the last bits of corn from the cafeteria kitchen.

We Run for the Red White & Blue

NORTH LIBERTY– The owners of We Run specialty running store in North Liberty, Kris and Brian Tharp, often hold group running events for their customers, running students and friends.
On Sunday, Sept. 8, the runners had some special guests.
Members of Team Red, White & Blue joined the Sunday run, carrying flags and sporting their Team RBW T-shirts to honor victims and heroes of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks on the World Trade Center and the U.S. Pentagon and the attempted attack on Washington, D.C.

West sweeps East

IOWA CITY– Two out of three wasn’t bad.
The West High Women of Troy swept the Waterloo East High Trojans 3-0 Tuesday, Sept. 3, at home in varsity volleyball action. West took the first set 25-18, but it was a hard-fought win.
“We weren’t ready to play that first one, were we?” coach Kathy Bresnahan asked rhetorically afterward.
