A dynamite performance

Fun and surprises with ‘The Foreigner’

TIFFIN– For Pete Huch it was a golden opportunity. Huch, the drama director at Clear Creek Amana (CCA) High School, has wanted to stage a production of Larry Shue’s “The Foreigner” since his college days.
“I finally got the cast for it,” Huch said, adding that the CCA group was a good fit for Shue’s cast of characters.

Women of Troy hold off Dubuque Hempstead Mustangs

West girls up to the challenge

IOWA CITY– The West High Women of Troy repelled a threat from the Mustangs of Dubuque Hempstead Tuesday, Jan. 8, pulling off a 55-46 MVC victory on their home court.
Laynie Whitehead put West on the scoreboard early in the first period, and West took a 9-1 lead prompting the Mustangs to call for a time-out. Ally Disterhoft hit the first of two 3-pointers late in the quarter for a 16-7 lead. The Mustangs galloped back in the second, out-scoring West 13-11. West held a 27-20 lead at the half, with 12 of those points coming from Disterhoft.

Battling the budget crunch

Senior Advocates seek city funding for Old Gold Diner site manager

SOLON– Without senior dining, there’s no way to reach older residents of the community with needed programs.
The Old Gold Diner is the hub of the senior community.
When budget cuts forced the elimination of the site manager position and the introduction of packaged plastic meals, local supporters began rallying the troops.
As a result, representatives of Solon Senior Advocates met with Solon City Council members last week, seeking city funds to match county money for the site manager position.

Clipper JV girls take Solon Spartans 60-49

TIFFIN– With the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) and Spartan varsity girls moving their match-up to Cornell College and “Rivalry Saturday,” Friday night’s junior varsity (JV) game became the marquee contest. The home crowd wasn’t disappointed though, as PJ Sweeney and company pulled off a 60-49 win powered by sophomore Lexi Kinnaird’s 22-point effort including one 3-pointer.
Kelly Noska, a junior, put in 15 points while sophomore Kiley Seelman had 12 with a trio of 3-bombs. Sophomore Kelsey Hall had a 9-point night and sophomore Alexa Sweeney added in 2.

Unexpected dip in value

Spartans capsize CCA Clippers

SOLON– The Spartans came out to play in the third quarter.
After building and losing a first-half lead, Solon’s varsity basketball squad held Clear Creek Amana (CCA) to 10 points in the second half and waltzed away with a 71-43 win Friday night.
“I thought it was our best overall second half of basketball we’ve played,” Solon head coach Brad Randall said. “Although we need to be ready to play defense a little earlier.”
Solon held a 6-point advantage at the end of the first quarter, but CCA came back in second quarter to tie and even take a 29-28 lead with three minutes before halftime.
