RURAL SOLON– As you pull into the driveway of Jake and Helen Beck’s home, a pair of horses trot over to the fence to look you over.
It’s no surprise the equines are there. Horses have been a large part of Helen’s life, and now they make up most of her veterinary practice.
Helen Beck, DVM, provides veterinary care, primarily to horses. She’s also one of a growing number of animal chiropractors providing adjustments to traditional family pets such as dogs and cats, with the background and knowledge to care for almost any of God’s creatures, great or small.

Students participate in Solon High School fall science fair

SOLON– Students in Solon High School’s Biology and Scientific Inquiry course put theory into practice at this fall’s high school science fair.
A mandatory requirement for the students, 97 freshmen and sophomores launched experiments of a scientific nature in order to participate in the event. The goals include choosing and conducting an experiment independently, communicating and defending the results in a public forum to adults in the scientific community, and manage a long-term project.

SOLON– You wouldn’t expect most high school seniors to spend much time at Solon’s waste water treatment plant behind Randall Park. But on a blustery Saturday morning, McKenna Cole and her father were ducking around two planter boxes attached to a vat of wastewater, making quick adjustments to her experimental filtration system.

Clippers pick up a win from Vinton-Shellsburg

TIFFIN– Nile Rourke summed it up very succinctly.
“It feels good to start the New Year off right.”
The junior was talking about his Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers’ 55-44 win Thursday night (Jan. 2) at home against the Vinton-Shellsburg Vikings. The win improved the squad’s record to 3-5 and took away some of the sting of a pre-Christmas loss to West Branch. “It was good to be in control and to keep it for the whole game. We’ve had trouble finishing games, so it’s about time we played a full game and finished and won a game,” Rourke said.

Grace Community Church members carry essence of Christmas through the year

CORALVILLE– They have become known as the kids who pray.
When residents at Lantern Park Nursing and Rehabilitation Center see them coming, something changes; an energy that is almost palpable suddenly fills the air.
Members of Grace Community Church in North Liberty have always done community outreach and service projects; it’s part of the church’s overall mission. But there is something a little special when a group of children and a group of aging seniors come together to share fellowship.

Moving to higher ground

Volunteers from the Solon United Methodist Church youth groups and from United Action for Youth gathered in the brisk conditions at Randall Park Tuesday afternoon to help spread sand and mulch for the relocation of the park’s playground equipment. It was HIS idea. Jolly Old Saint Nicholas conspired with Anushka Dervesh, whispering something in her ear just before her mother snapped this photo of the two of them sticking out their tongues. Santa Claus visited the North Liberty Community Center on Saturday, Dec. 7, to visit with local kids during the community’s annual Breakfast With Santa event. Children were able to enjoy a pancake breakfast, do a craft, play with Jumbe the Lion, view a toy train in action and watch a holiday video before jumping in the long line of kids waiting to sit on Santa’s lap.

IOWA CITY– The West High Trojan grapplers successfully defended their mats Thursday, Dec. 12, in double dual action against the Mustangs of Dubuque Hempstead and Saints of Cedar Rapids Xavier.
Against Hempstead, Chris Walters pinned Kaleb Phillips in 2:57 for the 132-pound match while John Milani took a 15-4 major decision from Kevin Pape in the 160 match. Aydan Wynos also won a major decision, 10-1, over Tanner Heeren. West’s varsity prevailed by a slim 29-27 margin to win the dual while the junior varsity (JV) crew fell, 36-34.
