Dubuque Street widening project begins this week

IOWA CITY– Pavement widening on Dubuque Street near the new intersection with Oakdale Boulevard will begin the week of July 8, weather permitting. The pavement widening will provide designated turn lanes for Dubuque Street traffic tuning onto Oakdale Boulevard. Dubuque Street will remain open to traffic, but at times it might be down to one lane directed by flaggers. The new section of Oakdale Boulevard should be open to traffic by October 2013.

July 21 Turkey Trot 5K to benefit NL community pantry

NORTH LIBERTY– The North Librty Community Pantry will host its first annual Thanksgiving in July Turkey Trot 5k Race and Family 1 Mile Event on Sunday, July 21, at 8 a.m., in conjunction with the community-wide food drive that provides food assistance to the hungry. This chip-timed race will begin and end at the pantry, 89 N. Jones Blvd., in North Liberty. Advance registration, due by Monday, July 8, is $25, Late registration July 9 through 21 is $35 and a T-shirt is not guaranteed.
All funds raised from the Turkey Trot will benefit the North Liberty Community Pantry and local families.

West High splits with Dubuque Senior softball

IOWA CITY– The night ended in a draw, but the Women of Troy still had reason to celebrate Tuesday, July 2. The Rams of Dubuque Senior visited for a varsity doubleheader and brought a 25-5 record overall and 16-4 Mississippi Valley Conference (MVC) record. West was 17-17 and 14-8 in contrast. The Rams were also ranked fourth in Class 5A while the Women of Troy were unranked.
So when West pulled off a 6-2 upset win in game one, some dugout dancing during game two could certainly be understood.

Clippers and Cardinals end in doubleheader split

TIFFIN– Brent Henry’s Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers suffered a 9-2 loss to the Maquoketa Cardinals Friday, July 5 on the home diamond, but rallied back to win the nightcap 6-5 in a WaMaC varsity doubleheader.

IOWA CITY– A two-run homer by Devin Raffensperger gave the West High Trojans a 2-0 lead in the second game of a varsity doubleheader Monday, July 1, at home against Dubuque Senior.

This hard rockin’ dude with all the hair is none other than North Liberty City Council member Terry Donahue, dressed to resemble a Kiss band member. Donahue and other members of the North Liberty Centennial Committee donned costumes and makeup for the North Liberty Fun Days parade on Friday, June 14, to promote the upcoming Hairball concert and other centennial celebration festivities scheduled for July 12-13. Proud to be part of NL’s Garner Elementary School

NORTH LIBERTY– School is out of session and summer is in full swing, but back-to-school preparation has already started for some.
Educator Nick Proud, the new principal at Garner Elementary School in North Liberty, has been working tirelessly over the last weeks to get ready for the upcoming school year– his first year as a principal.
Proud’s daughter, Ainsley, is starting a first of her own this year as she enters kindergarten at Garner Elementary.
“It’s both of our first day at school at Garner this fall. We’re excited about that,” Proud said.

ICCSD’s e-registration begins this month

IOWA CITY– The Iowa City Community School District will be piloting a centralized registration this summer at the Educational Services Center for families that are new to the district. To enroll, please call the district office at 688-1000 to schedule an appointment.
Registration for all elementary students will be held on Aug. 9, from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m., at the buildings or may be updated through e-Registration online at the district website beginning in mid-July. If you need help with updating eRegistration, please come to registration at your school building on Aug. 9.

North Liberty First UMC to host Kingdom Rock

NORTH LIBERTY– A summer kids’ event called Kingdom Rock will be hosted at the First United Methodist Church from July 21 through July 24. At Kingdom Rock, kids will participate in memorable Bible-learning activities, sing catchy songs, play teamwork-building games, make and dig into yummy treats, experience epic Bible adventures, and test out Sciency-Fun Gizmos they’ll take home and play with all summer long. Plus, kids will learn to look for evidence of God all around them through something called God Sightings.

SOLON– The Clippers of Clear Creek Amana (CCA) watched a 10-0 lead over the rival Solon Spartans evaporate into thin air Thursday, June 27, as the home team rallied back to win the nightcap 23-13 in six innings. Solon also took the first game of the evening 7-3 in a varsity doubleheader.

IC West drops first game, rallies back for nightcap win

IOWA CITY– Lose one, win one. That was the story Tuesday evening (June 25) for the West High Trojans baseball team as they split a non-conference doubleheader with the Knights from Davenport Assumption.
The Knights won the opener 6-4 with a five-run effort in the top of the seventh inning. The game was tied 1-1 after the first inning and the Trojans slowly built up a lead with a run in the second, fourth and sixth innings. The Trojans had seven hits and left 10 men stranded on base. The Knights put up ten hits and left nine men hanging.
