Budget cuts solid, administration salaries frozen

By Paul Deaton

IOWA CITY– Across Iowa, school districts are dealing with the end of one-time money provided by the federal government to support operations. The result has been dramatic budget cuts in school districts, including the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD).
Protests from students, faculty and community members over a $3.6 million budget cut for the 2014-2015 fiscal year have gone largely unaddressed by the school board since the decision to cut the budget was made last January.

No. 3 City High knocks-off No. 1 West in final second

By Chris Umscheid

IOWA CITY– City High’s Scott Tribbey launched a shot at the West High goal from about 30 yards out and scored as time ran out Tuesday, May 13, at the University of Iowa soccer field. His shot gave the number three-rated Little Hawks a 1-0 win over the top-ranked and until that moment, undefeated, Trojans.
But, some say his shot came after the game clock had hit 00:00. Curiously, the University’s soccer complex does not have a horn that sounds when time runs out.

North Bend Elementary hosts first Powder Fun Run

NORTH LIBERTY– After a bitter winter, students and their families were motivated to get outside and kick up their heels.
Over 450 participants joined in North Bend Elementary’s first annual 5K and 1 Mile Powder Fun Run fundraiser held Saturday, April 12, in North Liberty.
“This was a phenomenal turnout for our first event,” said co-organizer Angie Rummel. “We felt the event was very successful. Even though it was a bit windy, the temps warmed up for us and the rain– and snow– stayed away. After having such a long and cold winter, it was great to be outside and get active.”

Fine arts strike CCA’s board’s fancy

Choir, speech take center stage

OXFORD– After all of the performers and their families and friends left, the remainder of the evening was comparatively bland.
Third, fourth and fifth grade choir members at Clear Creek Elementary (CCE) performed for the Clear Creek Amana school board during a regular meeting Wednesday, April 16, in the CCE library. Also on the venue were four CCA high school students who competed in the All-State Speech Contest at University of Northern Iowa on March 31.
