Women of Troy win outdoor opener at Muscatine

MUSCATINE– Valerie Welch was a triple-winner for Iowa City West High Thursday, March 23, at Muscatine’s Dick Washburn Invitational, the first outdoor track meet of the 2017 season. Welch won the 200-meter dash in 27.78 seconds, the 100-meter hurdles in 15.95 seconds and the long jump with a 16-2 1/4 leap.
Gabby Skopec was a double-winner, taking the 1,500-meter run in 5:04.57 and the 3,000-meter run in 10:43.45.
Bailey Nock won the 800-meter run in 2:23.64.

NLPD in dire need of space

NORTH LIBERTY– Farmhouse. Doctor’s office. City hall. Police station.
The mid-century building at 5 E. Cherry St. has served many purposes, but its current tenants believe it has outgrown its function housing the North Liberty Police Department (NLPD).
“It was a temporary move to this building because the plan was always to build a forever home for a police department,” said North Liberty Police Chief Diane Venenga. “North Liberty is growing and we need a police department we can grow with and grow into.”

TIFFIN– It’s a hefty sum, but Tiffin City Administrator Doug Boldt encouraged residents not to be alarmed.
“Don’t let that big number throw up any major red flags,” he said. “Half of it is our capital projects.”
On Tuesday, March 7, the Tiffin City Council voted, 5-0, to approve the city’s fiscal year 2017-18 budget of $14,523,513– up about $7.8 million from last year. Consistent with Boldt’s comments, about $7.6 million, or 52 percent, is due to capital projects, which often carry outside funding.

NORTH LIBERTY– Hunt for that big rack you’ve been dreaming about on Saturday, March 25, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. with Take a Kid Outdoors (TAKO) at Creekside Commons Park in North Liberty. Lunch will be served at 11: 30 a.m., and participants are required to bring their own cutlery.
Be prepared to go on a short hike and possibly walk on some muddy trails to see spring birds, bugs and flowers. Advance registration for this free event is requested, but not required for groups of fewer than six.

Karl Krumbholz is area’s second big lottery winner in six months

CLIVE– Maybe his Irish heritage and St. Patrick’s Day had something to do with it. Maybe his mom is pulling strings from up above to send some luck his way. Whatever the reason, Karl Krumbholz of Cedar Rapids has won a $2 million Powerball prize.
“My mom passed away a year and a half ago. We’ve been joking about it: Now the Cubs have won the World Series and I’ve won the lottery,” Krumbholz said as he claimed his prize Friday– St. Patrick’s Day– at Iowa Lottery headquarters in Clive.

First United Methodist Church of North Liberty groundbreaking ceremony April 9

NORTH LIBERTY– The First United Methodist Church of North Liberty will host groundbreaking activities on Palm Sunday, April 9. The activities will begin with the 9:45 a.m. worship celebration followed at 11 a.m. by the outside groundbreaking ceremony. Members of the community are welcome to join the festivities.

Tiffin Volunteer Fire Department annual pancake breakfast Saturday, April 9

TIFFIN– The Tiffin Volunteer Fire Department and First Responders invites the public to attend its annual pancake breakfast Sunday, April 9, from 6 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the fire station, 221 Main St.
Chief Brian Detert said the department expects to serve around 1,200 people. The menu includes pancakes, eggs, whole hog sausage and cinnamon rolls. There will also be jam from Clear Creek Orchard for sale. There is no admission fee, but a free will donation is accepted.

MOUNT VERNON– The WaMaC Conference Indoor Track Meet is the final indoor event of the season, and often referred to as a final “tune-up” ahead of the regular (outdoor) season. Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) track and field teams competed among West Division teams on Saturday, March 18.

IOWA CITY– The Iowa City West High girls’ tennis team has a number of things going for it as the 2017 season approaches. First, the team will play on brand new courts with lights. Second, almost everybody is back from last season which gives coach Amie Villarini a sense of optimism for a successful season.
Last year, the Women of Troy compiled an 11-5 record overall and went 9-4 in the Mississippi Valley Conference, good for second place.

Six Trojans earn MVC All-Division basketball spots

IOWA CITY– The Mississippi Valley athletic Conference (MVC) released its 2017 All-Division basketball teams picks on Wednesday, March 1, with Iowa City West High’s Trojans picking up six spots in the Mississippi Division honors.
West coach Steve “Bergie” Bergman and his staff earned Division Coach of the Year honors while senior Connor McCaffery was named the Division Athlete of the Year. McCaffery was also a unanimous First Team pick while younger brother Patrick (a sophomore) and fellow senior Devontae Lane were also First Team picks.

TIFFIN– Good finishes in early season indoor meets coupled with success last season have given Clear Creek Amana girls track and field coach Jane Astor a sense of optimism and confidence. Astor, who has 27 years with the program, and assistants Teri Schultejans (10 years) and Bob Broghammer see strength on a number of fronts for the “Creek Girls.”
“We have a strong nucleus back and have gained some strong sprinters and middle distance athletes,” Astor said. “The indoor meets (at Wartburg and Cornell) highlighted strength at 200 (meter dash) and 400 (meter dash).”
