Matthew Smith and Indelible Grace concert to be Sept. 26

NORTH LIBERTY– Matthew Smith and the band Indelible Grace will perform on Saturday, Sept. 26, at 6:30 p.m. at Grace Community Church, 2707 Dubuque St. NE, North Liberty. Doors open at 5:30 p.m.
Matthew Smith is a Nashville-based singer-songwriter who writes new music to centuries-old hymn texts. Indelible Grace has drawn acclaim across denominational lines and is used in churches around the world..

CCA beats Ft. Madison, 27-14, on soggy Homecoming night

TIFFIN– It was the second home game of the season for Clear Creek Amana and Homecoming Friday, Sept. 18, as the Fort Madison Bloodhounds visited Tiffin. It was also the second time this season that near-constant rain fell and the second time a lengthy lightning delay made for a long night.
However, it was also the Clippers’ first win of the season as they scrubbed the dogs, 27-14, and improved to a 1-0 record in district play and 1-3 record overall.

Women of Troy slam the Rams

West wins, 3-0, in volleyball

DUBUQUE– The West High Women of Troy swept the Rams of Dubuque Senior, 3-0, in varsity volleyball action Tuesday, Sept. 15, in Dubuque. The Women of Troy, led by Ali Tauchen’s 10 kills, won 25-21, 25-16 and 25-7, and, in the process, improved their ranking by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union from 10th in Class 5A to sixth.

NORTH ENGLISH– Clear Creek Amana’s (CCA) boys varsity cross country team picked up another win as they took the English Valleys Invitational meet Tuesday, Sept. 15. Jake Tener led the guys with a third-place finish in 18:35.59. Eric Douglass and Wyatt Sedlacek were also in the top-10 finishers in fourth and seventh-place respectively.

IOWA CITY– The Mercer Park Aquatic Center was the site of the 2015 Little Hawk Invitational swim meet hosted by Iowa City High on Saturday, Sept. 19. The West High Women of Troy joined seven other teams and finished sixth in overall team points with 184. Ankeny won the meet with 398 points, MVC foe Cedar Falls was second (340) and Cedar Rapids Kennedy was third (319). The host Little Hawks were eighth in points with 131.
Erica Hsu picked up West’s only win, taking the 500-yard freestyle in 5:15.34. She also took second in the 200-yard IM in 2:12.10.

CORALVILLE– The Cedar Falls Tigers took a swimming dual meet from the West High Women of Troy, 118-68, Tuesday, Sept. 15, in the Coralville Recreation Center.
The Hsu sisters picked up three individual wins for West, with Erica taking the 200-meter individual medley in 2:10.70 and the 500-meter freestyle in 5:15.57, while Alison won the 100-meter backstroke in 1:03.07.
West is in action on Saturday, Sept. 26, at Cedar Rapids Kennedy’s invitational starting at 8:30 a.m. and travels to Linn-Mar on Tuesday, Sept. 26, with a 6 p.m. start time.

AMES– The meet summary described the conditions Saturday, Sept. 19, as “60 (degrees), perfect” for the 10th Heartland Cross Country Classic hosted by Des Moines Roosevelt High School and held at the Iowa State University Cross Country Course in Ames. The West High Women of Troy were “perfect” in the sense they won the meet, leading a field of 25 teams in total. West also aced MVC foes City High (seventh), Linn-Mar (10th), Cedar Falls (12th) and Cedar Rapids Prairie (24th).
Gabby Skopec led West with a sixth-place finish in 19:24.

Tiffin works to create affordable housing with higher-density, single family zoning

TIFFIN– Smaller lots can mean smaller price tags when it comes to purchasing new homes.
In an attempt to encourage development with more affordable housing, the Tiffin City Council has approved the first two readings of an ordinance amendment that will allow smaller lots for single family residential development.

City celebrates with a mix of old favorites, new traditions

SWISHER — Organizers of the 2015 Swisher Fun Days added several new attractions to the two-day annual festival. Fun Days, held Aug. 7-8 in the northwest Johnson County community, featured a Kids Zone with several inflatable attractions for the younger crowd and a first-ever human foosball tournament for more mature patrons.
The event, a Swisher tradition for decades, was previously sponsored primarily by American Legion Post 671. This year, volunteers from throughout the community organized the event.

CCA board hears annual progress report

TIFFIN— Among the requirements of the federal No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act, each school district must provide an annual report to the federal government, and to the public it serves, on academic performance.
Curriculum Director for the Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Community School District Mark Ernst presented the district’s Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) and Annual Progress Report (APR) to the school board at its regular meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 19, at Tiffin Elementary School.

ICCSD still drawn to magnet school concept

Task force will gather more information, community feedback

IOWA CITY– When it comes to magnet schools, officials from the Iowa City Community School District (ICCSD) are keeping the option on the table and asking for feedback.
At the Sept. 8 school board meeting, the ICCSD Board of Directors heard an update from the Magnet School Task Force, formed last year to explore the possibility of a magnet school in the district. Becky Furlong, the district’s Chief Academic Officer, presented the committee’s plan for seeking community feedback as a two-step process: educate and engage.
