Get ready for a new Leash on Life

Pet supply store adds to North Liberty’s shopping choices

NORTH LIBERTY– It’s appropriate that Julie Phye’s shop is called Leash on Life.
The Iowa City business owner’s life took a whole new direction after she adopted Rosie the Labrador retriever from a shelter in 2002. Adding Rosie to her family ultimately led Phye to leave her job at the University of Iowa to open her own pet supply business.
Because of Rosie, Leash on Life is not just about selling pet products.

Women of Troy advance to first round of state soccer tournament

IOWA CITY– They were nearly perfect.
The Iowa City West High girls rolled over the competition in the Class 3A Region 7 soccer postseason, punching their ticket to Des Moines and a Thursday evening date with No. 10 Waukee.
Coach Dave Rosenthal’s Women of Troy shut out Cedar Rapids Washington 5-0 in the regional semifinal June 3 in Iowa City and then clinched a berth in the state tournament with a 6-1 decision over No. 6 Cedar Rapids Prairie Monday, June 8.

Blue Jays fly away with CCA’s state tourney hopes

Clippers rout Raiders but fall, 2-1, to Bondurant-Farrar

TIFFIN– According to National Geographic, blue jays exhibit “raucous and rambunctious behavior.” They also move “stealthily, plundering other birds’ nests.”
The Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers found out firsthand what Blue Jays can do as they fell 2-1 to the Blue Jays of Bondurant-Farrar in a Class 1A Regional Semifinal girls soccer game on Friday, June 5, in Tiffin. The Clippers ended the season at 16-2 overall.
Kelsey Hall scored the Clippers’ only semifinal goal in the 57th minute, off a Bailey Mooney assist, breaking a 0-0 deadlock.

Youth a significant factor for West High Trojans on the diamond for 2015 season

North Liberty Leader
IOWA CITY– Graduation of 2014 was not kind to Charlie Stumpff and his West High Trojan baseball program.
While seniors Tyus Adkins, Nate Boland, Declan Doyle, Grant Ewing, Nick Gallagher, Brock Hatzky, Devin Raffensperger and Nick Spiess played throughout the summer leading West to a 34-10 record overall, 20-6 conference record, the start of the 2014-2015 school year saw them shedding their West High Green and moving on.

Clipper boys split with Benton

North Liberty Leader
TIFFIN– Brent Henry and his Clear Creek Amana (CCA) Clippers varsity baseball team improved to a 5-2 record early in the season after picking up a pair of wins at the BGM Tournament and splitting with Benton Community at home.
On Saturday, May 30, the Clippers faced BGM in Brooklyn in the Bears’ tournament and dispatched them, 13-6, before clipping the wings of the Springville Orioles, 13-0.

Two of the seven valedictorians, Trevor Toy and Tanner Bandy, made reference to life as a book. For this particular group of seniors, their books have an especially tragic footnote on their high school years.

County, Shueyville consider split on Curtis Bridge Road improvements

By Chris Umscheid
North Liberty Leader
SHUEYVILLE— For anybody who has driven the length of Curtis Bridge Road in northwest Johnson County, to say it is in bad shape would be an understatement. Its dilapidated condition led county officials to move the road up on its Five-year Road Maintenance and Improvement Plan, with work scheduled to begin late this summer.
Some surface material will be ground down, and the road will be widened two feet on either side before a hot asphalt overlay is applied for a smoother ride.

Construction to begin on North Ridge Trail through North Liberty

NORTH LIBERTY– Weather permitting, improvements on North Liberty’s North Ridge Trail recreation trail between Penn Street and Forevergreen Road will begin on Wednesday, June 3. The $310,000 project, which includes widening, elevating and resurfacing the trail, is expected to last into August.
Work will be done in segments. As each segment is being improved, its temporary closure will be required until the work is complete and the trail segment is safe to reopen.

Mowing roadside ditches prohibited before July 15

JOHNSON COUNTY– Johnson County’s Integrated Roadside Vegetation Management (IRVM) program reminds residents, landowners and local road maintenance crews that Iowa law prohibits the mowing of ditches along county secondary roads and state primary and interstate highways each year prior to July 15. The no-mow order allows time for hatching and development of ground-nesting birds and pollinators.
Johnson County Roadside Vegetation Manager Chris Henze said that in 2010, legislation changed the date from July 1 to July 15.
