Lady Spartans hit the reset button on season

Solon girls move to 4-4 with 68-29 win over Blazers

SOLON– The varsity Lady Spartans dominated the Dyersville Beckman Blazers on the hardwood Friday, Dec. 18. Solon took to the boards, as they had not previously during the season, in a 68-29 win. It was as if they were avenging a 25-24 loss, in the final seconds of the game, by the junior varsity (JV) team earlier in the evening.

Solon wrestlers split double dual

SOLON– Solon’s varsity wrestlers upended Anamosa but were edged out by Western Dubuque in a double dual meet held Dec. 17 at the Solon High School gymnasium.
The Spartans walloped Anamosa, 64-18, but fell to Western Dubuque, 43-26, to move to 2-3 on the dual season.
“Our three losses have come to three of the top teams in the WaMaC,” said Head Coach Blake Williams. “Each meet has been a one or two match difference. In each meet we had a match or two where we were ahead and almost got a pin, but ended up getting pinned. That is a 12-point swing in a dual meet.”

Lady Spartans back on track against Anamosa

ANAMOSA– The Lady Spartans traveled north to Anamosa to meet the 2-4 Raiders Tuesday, Dec. 15, and returned home one win closer to .500 on the basketball season. They got back on the winning path defeating the Anamosa Raiders, 42-32.
Brianna Smith put the Lady Spartans on top in the opening minute of the game with a 3-point shot, and the Spartans didn’t look back.
The Lady Spartans doubled up the Raiders in the first period, 13-6. Bryce Hinkel sank a shot with four minutes remaining in the half to put Solon up, 23-9.

Solon comeback falls short against Anamosa

SOLON– Faced with a 13-point deficit to open the fourth quarter, the Solon Spartans clawed their way back to within a point, but it just wasn’t enough.
Despite a gutsy comeback, the Spartans suffered their first loss of the varsity basketball season Dec. 15 in Solon, falling to the Anamosa Raiders, 50-45.
Anamosa jumped out to a 10-point first quarter lead, and the two teams played evenly until the final period, when Solon outscored Anamosa, 12-4.

Solon runner-up at North Linn tournament

TROY MILLS– The Spartan varsity wrestlers continued to fare well in weekend tournaments, taking second place at the North Linn Varsity Lynx Invitational Dec. 19.

Is that you, Santa Claus?

Eight-month-old Lacey Kay Marie Scheib peers intently at the man with the white beard and red suit during Santa’s visit to the Solon Public Library Dec. 7. Scheib was one of nearly 200 children who came to sit on Santa’s lap during the event. Kids were given a candy cane and could also make a scratch art ornament or build a holiday-themed LEGO set. Schools for a modern world

SOLON– Students are often asked to study the world as it once was and learn to operate successfully within the world as it currently is. Now, they will be trained how to navigate the world that will be.
This year, the Solon Community School District made a concerted effort to make include “21st century skills” in the curriculum.

Getting to know teacher librarian Miranda Kral

Check out some humor with your books

SOLON– Miranda Kral asks some unusual questions.
What building has the most stories? (A library.) Who is the coolest king in the world? (King Author.) What does a cat like to read? (A mewspaper.)
As the Solon Community School District’s new teacher librarian, her favorite puns include— you guessed it— libraries and books.
