Yellow doesn’t mean stop

DOT agrees to removal of flashing yellow at Highway 1 and Main Street

SOLON– A yellow traffic signal means to proceed with caution.
Not enough people traveling Highway 1 through Solon have been able to grasp the concept.
The Solon City Council last week agreed to proceed with a project funded by an Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT) grant which will remove the flashing yellow lights which stretch across the Highway 1 intersection of with Main Street.

St. Mary to host Solon blood drive Thursday, Oct. 24

SOLON– A Solon community blood drive will be held from 3 until 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 24, at St. Mary Catholic Church, 1749 Racine Ave. N.E., inside Fellowship Hall.

Legion to host turkey dinner Nov. 3

SOLON– The Solon American Legion will have a turkey dinner on Sunday, Nov. 3, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.
The menu includes turkey and dressing, real mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, cranberry sauce, rye bread, homemade dessert, coffee and milk. The cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children 6 through 12, and children 5 and under free.

Pumpkin carving/painting event to be held Oct. 27 at Randall Park

All children age 12 and younger are invited to come paint or carve a pumpkin from 1:30-3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 27, at the Randall Park shelter. Solon Parks and Recreation will supply the pumpkins for the kids. Each child will get to pick out his or her own pumpkin and must be accompanied by an adult. Paint pens and markers will be provided, however each child/parent is required to bring their own carving materials. The fee is $5 per child.

Solon’s Sam Miller among the nominees for state’s superintendent of the year

SOLON– Sam Miller, superintendent of the Solon Community School District, was a nominee for the 2013-2014 Iowa Superintendent of the Year award sponsored by the School Administrators of Iowa (SAI).
Solon has recently implemented Standards-Based Grading, a grading and reporting practice that measures students’ proficiency on well-defined course standards. Additionally, Solon has developed a comprehensive Strategic Plan, and completed construction on a new Spartan Stadium.

Lady Spartans avenge loss to West Delaware in final

MARION– It was a clean sweep for the Lady Spartans at last week’s WaMaC volleyball tournament.
Solon didn’t drop a set in pool or bracket play, outlasting both Marion and West Delaware in the semifinals and finals at Marion Thursday night.
The Lady Spartans defeated Benton Community (21-7, 21-10), DeWitt Central (21-10, 21-13) and Marion (21-14, 21-18) in pool play Tuesday at Manchester, then faced Dyersville Beckman (25-13, 25-19), Marion (25-22, 25-22) and then West Delaware (25-23, 25-22) in the highly contested championship bracket.
