No. 2 Solon takes Mt. Pleasant

A win over CCA would give the Lady Spartans a state berth

SOLON– The Lady Spartans opened the 2013 campaign by beating Clear Creek Amana (CCA).
A pair of bookend wins would get the No. 2 Spartans a berth in the state tournament.
In a Class 4A region 8 final Tuesday night (Nov. 5), the No. 15 Clippers were expected to bring their 23-9 record to Cedar Rapids Washington to face Solon, with the winner advancing to state.
The Lady Spartans defeated Mount Pleasant 3-0 in the regional semifinal Thursday night (Oct. 31) in Solon after a first round bye.

Runners tackle Fort Dodge

FORT DODGE– They watched the team races from the outside this year. However, Solon supporters among the couple thousand fans kept their focus on the individual races at the Nov. 2 State Cross country meets. Junior Alex Smith was 46th in the girls’ 4 kilometer race. Junior Ty Appleget was 22nd in the boys’ 5 kilometer course, with senior Patrick McGill 36th.

School releases facilities report

Board members mull over future buildings

SOLON– You might want to think about replacing that middle school.
The Solon school board discussed its options for the district’s facility plan on Monday, Oct. 21. While the board did not finalize any course of action, members appeared in agreement about a consultant’s recommendations and the overall phasing of significant projects, including the addition of a large-enough auditorium at the high school.

Solon Legion to host turkey dinner Nov. 3

SOLON– The Solon American Legion will have a turkey dinner on Sunday, Nov. 3, from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.
The menu includes turkey and dressing, real mashed potatoes, sauerkraut, cranberry sauce, rye bread, homemade dessert, coffee and milk. The cost is $10 for adults, $5 for children 6 through 12, and children 5 and under free.

Supes wrestle with with options for justice center

IOWA CITY– It could be back to the drawing table, literally, for some area architects. While the Johnson County Board of Supervisors continues to grapple with how to move forward in addressing courthouse and jail space needs, the possibility of dividing the proposed justice center into two separate projects appears more likely.

SOLON– There are few toys on the market that better help a child’s creativity than Legos®. It allows students to build something entirely of their own, with or without instructions– Legos® inspire creativity, art, critical thinking, and of course, storytelling.
At the Solon library Lego® club meeting last Monday, Oct. 7, imagination was rampant.
