Spartans clip Cardinals for district title

MAQUOKETA– It took a while to get going, but once Solon’s offense came to life, it helped turn a 10-point deficit into an 11-point halftime lead.
In a wild, back-and-forth scoring barrage, the Spartan football team outlasted the Maquoketa Cardinals to claim the Class 3A District 6 regular season title Friday in Maquoketa, 49-31.
Although Solon struck first on a 35-yard interception returned for touchdown by Jacob Black, the Spartans found themselves on the wrong end of a 17-7 deficit early in the second quarter.

CENTER POINT– It’s back home for districts Oct. 24 as Solon’s cross country teams determine whether they run once more at the 2013 state meet.
Solon’s boys launched their postseason run with sixth place at the WaMaC Conference meet in Center Point Thursday, Oct. 17. The girls finished second. “It was a great night. We had 40 personal records from the 53 boys and girls running,” noted coach Emy Williams.

A mission of love

One veteran’s quest to help his fellow veterans win the battle against PTSD

CEDAR RAPIDS– “People sleep peacefully in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf.”
It’s a quote of uncertain origin, but there is no uncertainty about whom it was said.

American pickers

Ray Novotny picks apples from the scoop of an endloader operated by Glenn Shima on his rural Solon farm on Sugar Bottom Road. Shima said the two, both 86 years old, have been picking apples from the Granny Smith tree for years. Most are given away, he said. (photo by Doug Lindner)

Librarian looks to inspire love for reading

Carey Major feels privileged to work in community

SOLON– Building castles out of Legos® isn’t a typical activity during most everyone’s workday, but for Solon Public Library’s children services librarian, Carey Major, it’s part of the normal job description. Major spends many of her days telling story-time to preschoolers, creating finger plays, interacting with students of all ages, and building Lego® creations.
“Basically my job is to make a fool of myself, and I love it,” Major said with a chuckle.
