Volleyball camp registrations available

SOLON– Solon Youth Volleyball Camps are approaching. Registration forms are available online in the Virtual Backpack and can be turned in at camp with payment, but please email Coach Gustin with the player’s name, grade, and T-shirt size (youth or adult) at pgustin@solon.k12.ia.us, as soon as possible.
Grades three, four and five camp: Aug. 4 and 5, 10 a.m. until noon.
Grades six, seven and eight camp: Aug. 4-5, 12:30 until 2:30 p.m.

School board selects construction manager

Ames company approved pending bond issue passage

SOLON– Story Construction of Ames has been selected to provide Construction Management services for the Solon school district, if a September bond issue passes.
At a July 14 meeting, members of the Solon school board voted 4-1 to approve Story Construction at an estimated cost of between $1.29 million and $1.5 million. Tim Brown cast the dissenting vote.
Story Construction and Larson Construction Co. Inc. of Independence made presentations to the school board at its June 2 meeting, with discussion following on June 26.

Meal and a Movie moved to Aug. 1

SOLON– Senior Advocates are moving the July Meal and a Movie to Friday, Aug. 1, at 11 a.m. at the library. A movie set in Cornwall by Sea starring Judi Dench and Maggie Smith as two sisters who nurse a gifted young Polish violinist back to health after being swept overboard. The young man’s presence tends to disrupt the peaceful lives of the sisters and their community. Solon women unload 21 hits on CCA

FORT DODGE– Solon head coach Jim White really wanted that first run.
In the top of the first inning, the Lady Spartans came up with three clutch two-out singles to score first against Clear Creek Amana (CCA) in a 4A quarterfinal at the state softball tournament in Fort Dodge Monday.
A year ago, Solon had been ranked No. 3 and came into the state tournament with only two losses, but the unranked Washington Demons jumped out to a 3-0 lead and the Lady Spartans didn’t recover.
This time, against a familiar foe in the CCA Clippers, it was another story.

Spartans advance to substate final against CCA

SOLON– Solon’s baseball team advanced to a Class 3A substate final with a 7-5 win over Washington (Iowa) Monday night, July 21.
Nathan Hawkins pitched seven innings for the win, striking out nine batters and walking four.
The victory placed Solon in the 3A Substate 5 final against Clear Creek Amana Wednesday, July 23, at Solon (subsequent to the publication of this edition). The winner moves on to the 3A state baseball tournament in Des Moines which begins Tuesday, July 29.
The win against Washington was the second in a week for the Spartans.

Mercy Iowa City to present free bariatric seminar

IOWA CITY– Dr. Shireesh Saurabh will offer a free seminar to potential bariatric surgery patients on Thursday, July 24, from 6 until 7 p.m. in the first floor conference room at Mercy Iowa City.
Bariatric surgery is surgery on the stomach and/or intestines to help a person with extreme obesity lose weight. Bariatric surgery is an option for people who have a body mass index (BMI) above 40. It is also an option for people with a body mass index between 35 and 40 who have health problems like type 2 diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol or sleep apnea.

SHUEYVILLE– Hippocrates is said to have coined the phrase, “Primum non nocerum (First do no harm),” as part of his famous and time-honored oath for physicians. Although he’s not a medical doctor, Marck Dudrey, aka: the Motor Doctor, takes that philosophy to heart when it comes to his customers’ wallets.
“I like to think of myself as auto repair with a conscience,” Dudrey said. “I’m not going to sell you something on your car that I don’t feel you need.”

St. John Lutheran Church in Ely begins new addition

SOLON– To accommodate the incredible growth in population within the Ely community, St. John Lutheran Church is taking steps to create more space for worship, fellowship and classroom learning.
“Our mission is to be a presence in Ely and to provide services for the needs of this community,” explained Pastor Erika Uthe. “Our hope and goal really is to let people know that there is a place for them and that they will always be welcome here no matter what. This addition helps us to provide the space.”

Solon man charged with sending letters to Iowa City Regina

IOWA CITY– A Solon man has been charged with harassment after sending threatening letters to the Iowa City Regina school system.
According to the Iowa City Police Department (ICPD), Daniel Lee Stone, Solon, has been identified through DNA evidence as the author of several letters accusing the Regina football coaching staff of providing performance-enhancing drugs to athletes.

Advocates seek donations to offset purchase of 13-passenger mini-bus

SOLON– The Solon Senior Advocates are pleased to have recently been able to make the purchase of a 13-passenger mini-bus. Paired with the Solon Retirement Village van, the Advocates are now able to transport up to 27 seniors on monthly trips, greatly reducing costs to seniors. Previous to the mini-bus purchase, a group totaling over 12 seniors required the hiring of a more expensive travel coach which resulted in higher senior travel costs.

43rd annual Beef Days begins Friday

SOLON– This Friday and Saturday, July 18 and 19, Solon Beef Days will hold its 43rd celebration. This two-day event, traditionally starting the third Friday in July, has collected and donated over $420,000 back into the community and surrounding area since 1971. This year alone the committee gave over $35,000.

Methodist youth group Beef Days Luncheon

SOLON– The Solon United Methodist Church (SUMC) youth group will be hosting its Beef Days Luncheon directly after the parade this Saturday, July 19. The youth group will be serving tenderloins, church burgers, potato salad, baked beans and amazing desserts. Meal items can be purchased individually or as a combo meal.
